I'm not so sure, sat in my office today, hearing the rain thump down on the roof, I thought this could be the beginning of Hurricane Ethal!

Record low pressure in the Atlantic basin (882 millibars), sustained wind speeds of 175mph with higher gusts, heading for Naples & then Miami (so the reports predicted yesterday). Part of an email from a mate in the US:

Now hear this: WILMA is now the most powerful hurricane EVER in the history of man, bigger than katrina and rita and andrew, it's the King of Kings. Holy SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET. due to hit FLA saturday. stay tuned.

No

It may be the most powerful hurricane in recorded history, but who knows what hurricanes happened 3,000 years ago.

If it's the strongest since we started recording them then we have no proof that it isn't the strongest ever on the planet either before or since the origin of mankind - but I'll grant you it doesn't seem very likely.

Everything A-OK other than the fact that I have a cold and we are missing a small piece from our pool screen.

Oh, and the wife's hibiscus are now lowbiscus.

Miami got nailed.

It blew through pretty quick, though. 20-25 mph. It also elongated because of the pressure cell (getting down to 48F tonight, brrrr).

BTW, the last extended forcast had it going up the east coast (creating some "perfect storm" type conditions - n'oreasters) and then guess where? Across the Atlantic toward the UK.

Keep an eye on it...

ErnestM

PS: Wilma recently merged with the remnants of tropical storm Alpha (I kid you not - we are now into Greek Alphabets for names)

No no it will be true and its entirely caused by cars. The only way to stop it is more speed cameras, bumps and extra traffic lights. Oh and some trams, that should do the trick.

Thanks Mate!

By the way, I'm not joking about it heading to the UK for a visit either:

What do you think the chances are? And what would you say it would be like by that time? Or can it not really be predicted? I'm asking as you've obviously monitored a few and know lots more than myself.

Chances of hitting the UK overall (from what I have read) are about 50%. If it keeps going as is, it will be tropical storm force winds and rain (about 35-70mph). Even if it hits as a tropical depression you would get TS wind gusts of up to about 40. I guess it would, undoubtedly, hit Ireland first and then the remnants would fall all over Wales and England.

Batton down the hatches...

70 mph isn't that bad. My parents had that last year without any damage (tie eveything down, etc). Places that don't keep trees trimmed get more damage. Last night they had around 50 or 60 mph which reduced to a wimpy 30 mph as of this afternoon. They live on the inside of the intracoastal waterway on Clearwater beach.

The governor was mad at the morons in Key West, who are famous for not evacuating no matter what. It doesn't rate as news in my opinion: they've had an ongoing culture of group stupidy. Approximately no one was surprised. They've close the highway out there as it's unpassable, so the sorry little retards are stuck and no one can go help them. Tough luck. It's nobody's right to endanger emergency workers by putting themselves at unnecessary risk.

That was a hilarious little rhyme by the way. I have long thought that they should look up the most popular baby names and use those as hurricane names! mwahahaha!! You'd get a lot fewer Dakotas and Caitlins in the population.

And you aren't lying, ErnestM: it's freezing right now. 50F!! 40 tonight! Holy crap!
