...it really is a no-brainer when you think about it. Johnny Chav gets banged up for a drugs offence. While inside he learns how to burgle a house and nick a car. He doesn't get rehabilitated. Ends up costing the Tax payer thousands and never pays Tax.

I reckon more prisoners should be rehabilitated in the community rather than simply banged up where they get worse.

No, I think they should be banged up for longer.

And we need boot camps like in the States. Make them earn their stay at HM's pleasure.

Well, personally I think that's a crock idea.

I for one don't particularly want a convicted kiddie fiddler cum wandering hand wimmin molester sharing the bus stop with any of my family.

Now, I'm pretty certain that there area number of crims out there who could be rehabilliterated, but the question saurely must be rehabilliterated fro mwhat int owhat else?

I reckon the prisons are over crowded and the system probably isn't working, my advice, bring back flogging and corporal punishment.

Treat them like humans for a start. So many of them have simply never had an authority figure that gives a damn!

Treat them like humans? But they have NO respect for anyone else's person or property. Why should I treat them like a human?

Hmm... Maybe they are beyond rehab though...

What about making Prison, actually prison? Concrete bed, no tv, no games, nothing, oh and bread and water.

That might be a deterrant.

Or put them to work - chain gang style.

That would probably "violate their human rights"

They need shock treatment. 10 hours cleaning a day ditches, collecting litter off the side of roads, removing graffiti, that kind of stuff. Make their lives miserable, give them no priveledges. Screw them - most feel no remorse when they burgle your house, nick your car, duff you over on a dark street corner.

Sure - I'm not talking about someone who diddled the local council out of £57 in unpaid council tax.

Theives, muggers, rapists, murderers - these are the sort of scum who need sorting properly. No TV, fluffy cushions and 5 portions of fruit & veg a day for them.

I'm kinda with this on one proviso.

I think this kind of punishment should apply when it can be proved that the criminal was fully aware of his actions and the consequences.

In the few cases where criminals are evidently not in touch with what they've done then I think some comfort should be afforded to those that society finds easier to remove rather than rehabillerate.

For those that are eveidently aware, I thnik a short sharp shock might work better than a prolonged 'softer' term.

Though, and I should point out here, I've never bee nto a prison so I'm not sure just how cushy it is/isn't.

I am pretty certain though, that if for a minor misdemeanour you spent a week in solitary eating only bread and water that you'd probably reconsider your options when contemplating your next crime.

I have to disagree Srebbe

I believe that studies shave shown that rates of reoffending are the same whether prison is the punishment or whether some sort of community sentence is imposed.

Therefore we must consider the two other merits of prison, as a punishment, and, primarily, as a means of keeping criminals off the streets, so they commit no further crimes.

Nah.... If they are inside they all have to do the litter duty, grafiti cleaning whatever. The only thing that changes is the length of your sentence..

Maybe who knows.

There should be some rehab though... shirley?

So we give up? That is the easy way out, surely.

Ultimately, rehabilitation is the best outcome - Crime in general is expensive. It costs money to detect, bring before a court, and possibly lock people up; not to mention the direct cost of the crime itself. It's far better to end up with someone who will work and pay taxes.

Prison does keep people off the streets, but you can't lock someone up for good or for very long periods, save for extremely serious offences or where there is little chance of rehabilitation. You would end up with a ridiculous number of people in prison.

People commit crime for a number of reasons, and there normally is a specific reason even if it isn't obvious at first. I would hazard a guess that there aren't many problems that can't be addressed in one way or another.

This is obviously something that is hugely complex and there is going to be no quick fix, however I strongly believe that you get out of people what you put into them. If you tell someone that they are not worth anything, and treat them like scum then that is what they will become.

I am not saying that crime should go unpunished, but that any punishment should be constructive, and prison rarely is.

It costs about £1000 per week of our tax payers money to keep em banged up. And these people are not contributing to society or paying Tax. 90% reoffend when they're and the balance simply haven't been caught. What a complete waste of time and money. This is the sort of thing which is more effective and cheaper:

How about reducing the overcrowding by taking a more extreme line i.e. death sentances for murder, castration for rape? For once I think the muslims have the right idea on this - chop a theives hands off and he won't steal again!
