Ken's out, David Davis comes top, but only marginally, Liam Fox does better than expected but Cameron probably the biggest winner.

Personally, I can't believe the MPs have voted Clarke out of the race, again. I only hope that Cameron get's all Clarke's votes. A Tory party goverened by Davis or Fox = a Tory party out of government for another term.

I bet Brown is gleefully happy, thinking about his showdowns with 'heavyweights' like Davis or Fox....

Wow, clearly a very important topic given the number of posts so far!!!

FWIW, I agree with you - Clarke has a lot of currency with the electorate, while the other three are virtual unknowns. My view at this stage is Cameron is probably the only one likely to engage the country sufficiently over the next 4 years to give them any chance whatsoever.

If Davis or Fox get it, then Brown will be counting down the days until Blair steps down.

too right.

Have to keep our fingers crossed for cameron now.

the bbc like him judging from john sopells comments on news 24

What amazes me is just how out of touch the tories clearly are that they can vote out Ken so early on.

I thought the party membership were bad enough but I really didnt expect the MPs to be so dumb.

David Davis is living in fantasy land if he thinks he even has a chance of winning an election against Gordon Brown.

Perhaps the Tories feel that they need a 'Blair' for their party, someone young who can be 'moulded' into shape during the next few years. I didn't really know much about Blair before he go elected as Labour leader, you never know!

dont lose heart yet,

Cameron could well be the right man. He has the right image and the media seem to like him too.

If his PR team get it right, I think he could win the next election.

But if Davis or Fox win..forget it.

Poor whippet...

(alcohol is extremely poisonous to whippets)

(also whippet owners tend to hate the Labour Party for having banned coursing)

so maybe there's something Dave isn't telling us.

I'm basically a lefty but I'd have voted for a Clarke-led Conservative party at the next election. I consider New Labour to be a shower of shit, I agree with Clarke on most things apart from Europe, he doesn't seem to suffer from being pushed ever further to the right by the rightward movement of New Labour, and I reckon he'd give the party a realistic chance of getting in.

Cameron I don't really know anything about and I suspect I am far from alone in this. And it may now be too late to get a realistic impression of what he's really like day to day as opposed to what the propaganda machine tell us to try and win the election with him.

Remember that this is the party that chose IDS over Clarke ... idiots.

When Clarke speaks he has a swagger and arrogant confidence based on years of experience; there is substance behind his image. Anyone know if Cameron has achieved anything? Anything backup his style? Sales blather runs pretty thin after a while. Will he have the force of perosnality to lead? Does he really have any ideas?

Of course you are correct, this bunch of losers has contrived to keep the Tories out of government for 2 and a bit terms now.....

Let's hope Cameron does have it in him to be leader, after all, Fox and Davis damn well don't.

It's surprising how quickly things change in politics, one poorly received conference speech and Davis has gone from the coming man to boring grey man.

I don't know who would make the best prime minister out of Cameron and Davis, but perhaps we have to look at who would be most likely to get the Tories elected.

If Davis is elected it would be presented as a lurch to the right (though his views seem indistinguishable to his would be predecessors)

Since Cameron has been talked up as the great 'moderniser' it is not an angle of attack the media can use.
