Got my car in the autotrader right now, and received this:

some dodgy geezer said:
Hello........am mark, for sometime now i've been searching for this make of your car and am so happy to inform you that i came across it on autotrader site today .Pls get back to me as to wheather car is still for sale am interested,BUYING FOR Price:£9,000 and also the present condition of the car.
Thanks.
Mark

Now I might be completely wrong, but that email looks highly suspicious to me. Firstly, the syntax 'this make of your car' and 'am so happy to inform you' and 'BUYING FOR'.

Secondly, its some spurious Yahoo email address, and there is also no phone number. I think its likely some effort of an email harvest, or scam?

It *might* be OK. You could always reply nicely and see what his next move is.

At least he's not offering to send you a cheque up front.

Hi Tom,
I will like to say a big thank you for your reply, am satisfied with the condition of the car think it would be a great buy.Its perfectly okay in uk. I travel a lot in my line of buisness hence the reason why i choose not to acquire a car since i sold the last one i had. I am ok with the car's picture and it will be good to let you know that i will be paying you with a bank draft or company's cheque that was intended for me through services rendered (£13,000).The only problem is that sum owed me by the investment company is more than the price of your car. I would greatly appreciate if you could deduct sum of your car(£9,000 )from the amount and have the rest of(£4,000) sent to my shipping agent (through Money Gram International Money Transfer this is reliable). so that they will come for the pickup of the car in your location. I will wait till draft or cheque clears before i instruct my shipping agent to take up ownership of car on my behalf. I really am very sorry that it has to be this way but i do not want to miss out on this great buy. Please send me the following information below so i could have the company make out the draft in your name and send it to you immediately.Thanks.
full name...............
full address.................
mobile phone number..................
Waiting to read from you soonest
Mark.

What does he think I am, stupid?

Sounds innocent enough......

IIRC, this scam is on page 1 of the scammers handbook....

I would reply asking for a far larger percentage as a handling fee for cashing his cheque, like the whole £13k. See what he says.

Or say you've had an offer for £10k, so you'll have to decline, and see how far he's prepared to go.

Can anybody suggest an address I can give him to send his cheque? Don't wanna give him my address.

Anyone got a work address where they could collect this cheque and scan it for us all?
