I'm off to Shanghai for the F1 race this weekend, but then have two weeks working there.

Has anyone been? What touristy things are worth doing? I'm clueless about the place and would really appreciate some insight from the PH travelling massive :)

I`m back!

What to do..........

Visit the wonky market.
Go to the beer festival at the Holiday Inn.
Get a massage (without "extras".
Take a taxi and see your life flash before you.
Go to the computer market.
Eat, drink and be merry!

Take a trip up the Oriental Pearl Tower (not the OXO...) - you can't miss it, its bloody huge and shaped like a large rocket. When I was in Shanghai, it was the tallest building on earth AFAIK.

Walk along the Bund.

Er, that's about it. I was there for 2 weeks, but worked all 14 days

I absolutely loved Shanghai, was there for 11 days staying with a friend and had the time of my life.

As said before do all the usual touristy stuff, Bund, Oriental Pearl, JinMao building, Science Museum etc. It's a spectacular site to look across the river from the bund at night.

DEFINITLY have a massage, I had both a Chinese massage and then went back for a Shiatsu (Japanese) in a little place off the Nanjing Road, no extras for me either but well worth it.

Check out some of the markets (there's hundreds of them) and get bargaining.

The shopping centre is Nanjing road, it's a very long road running all the way from the Bund to People's square. I went to a shooting range off here too, which was a cool experience, fired a few guns, most notable being a .45 revolver, not cheap though especially when you get carried away (they charge you by the bullet)

Lot of expat bars on Mao Ming Road (Lu). Xin Tian Di is like Shanghai's Covent Garden with some great restaurants and cafes and some very nice bars. Club wise some big dj's head to Shanghai and the city really is buzzing at night, Rojam was one of my favourites.

Overall I don't think I could ever get bored there, the people are nice, it always felt like a safe place to be (unusual for such a huge city) and there's no end of stuff to do.

The only bad point I can think of is that like all of China's cities it's heavily polluted and as with most of mainland China don't expect many natives to speak English (Not really a problem, just take a Mandarin phrasebook and have some fun).
