In previous years Mrs Sparky and I have had winter holidays in the Florida Keys and on Florida's Gulf coast.

This year we fancy staying somewhere on the Space Coast or Gold Coast somewhere between Cape Canaveral and Fort Lauderdale.

Would be pleased to hear any recommendations of places to stay or avoid.

I can't reccomend places to stay, but if you like a bit of history the States actually have one in the form of St Augustine, we stayed a couple of days there on the way back from Georgia.

Very pleasant town but if you go check "Rendezvous" sounds a bit pants but it is a beer bar with around 300 bottled beers from around the world. I actually tried my first Russian beer in Florida!

One of the bar staff there was very friendly and I suspect he was a Brit with a local accent, I mean he did sarcasm and irony, was paid in Guiness and knew where Wales, Scotland and Ireland were in relation to England, I nearly wept!

My old man found a nice place near Titusville I think, seemed pleasant enough and quite reasonable, couldn't give any detail at this stage tho'.

Do you intend Hotels or a villa\self catering?

Cheers

Cape Canaveral is a crap hole.

Don't stay there. Just visit it.

We had many years holidaying on this coast as we had a friend with a "condo" there.....which was nice!!

It always used to be pretty "un-touristy" and most of the people tended to be Americans rather than Brits/Europeans.

We always stayed at Flagler Beach - just a small town on A1A. The Topaz Motel had a good reputation, but that was quite a while ago....

Saw a Giant Turtle on the beach the one year which was rare - you usually just see their tracks from the night before.

Look out for the pelicans - they're poo is........fishy!

We always loved it there.

St Augustine is a nice enough town - bit touristy and the "history" tends to be a bit "in your face"....but then I s'pose you can't blame them making the most of it....

Having said all that, we now tend to go to the Gulf Coast...

Have fun!

From N to S:

St Augustine (www.staugustine.com/). Pleasantly surprised by this historical town. Sebastian inlet is nice but very quiet.
Lauderdale by the Sea (10 minutes North of Fort Lauderdale). www.lauderdalebythesea.com/
Stay here - I've been 3 times: www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g34381-d251992-Reviews-Courtyard_Villa-Lauderdale_by_the_Sea_Florida.html

Avoid Daytona - its a dump.
Avoid Boca Raton - restricted access to beaches and full of apartment complexes.

I live in Jacksonville and use to live in Palm Beach and Ft. Lauderdale.

Kennedy Space Center is nice to visit, but you will be done with it in a day. I'd suggest staying in Cocoa Beach, its about 15 miles to the south of the cape. Here is a nice hotel - www.hiltoncocoabeach.com/?cid=goo

If your looking for history, we don't have much. St. Augustine is a neat little town, but its pretty touristy. Personally I like Savanna GA or Charleston SC over St. Augustine.

New Smyrna Beach just to the north of the Cape is still pretty quiet if your looking to be away from people.
