And its got me thinking, surely a 26 year old fella like myself should not be suffering so many colds, and this time its really got me thinking.

I must be really unhealthy is all I can say, so I'd like some advice about what people here would do in my boots to rectify the situation.

Basically, I do very little exercise. I do drink, but I've been cutting back lately - drink seems to be getting me a lot more drunk considering the amount consumed. I can't cook, so I tend to live off microwave meals and the like. However, that'll change next week onwards because I am moving back in to my parents house (I moved out some time ago) so I will get my meals cooked for me again. I do not take vitamins but I do drink smoothies (i.e. innocent smoothies etc). I do smoke a couple of marijuana bongs a day.

So I am off work today, and wondering where to start, anyone got any advice on what they would do - or some of you may have been in this situation before. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Exercise, eat more fruit and veg and take a vitamin supplement. That will build your immune system up and hopefully kick the colds.

Cutting back on booze is not good cos its a dissinfectant. Vitamin C and excercise will stop you getting colds.

Oh if you work in an air conditionned office with women then you will get lots of colds cos the silly buggers show up for work with stinking colds so everyone gets it. Then they start woffling about man flu

Lose the wacky backy and drink 2 pints of fresh orange juice a day, as vitamin C has been proven to decrease the duration and severity of colds.

Well, somebody has to hold the fort in the absence of all the men at home with tickly throats!

Try taking Echinacea (you can buy it in chewable tablet form!) over the next few months. IIRC, it's more effective if you take it for a couple of weeks or so and then have a short break, then repeat the cycle etc.

I would say it has more to do with your work environment than how much booze you drink or pot you smoke, unless you are sharing your Bong with someone who has a cold
just take a few vitamins and wear a facemask to work!

I haven't been doing much office work recently, most of my work is now outdoors and i just don't get colds /coughs at all anymore.

Learn how to cook as well, it's really not hard - you could get your mum to teach you when you move back home. Other than that just have some fruit about the place instead of crisps etc for snacks.

Do more exercise, especially cardio and start having a glass of fresh orange juice every morning and get your Vit C levels up.

If you're in an office where germs are recirculated, it's tricky. 500mg of Vitamin C a day won't do any harm and might do some good; they also say zinc helps (avaiable in tablets; you don't need to suck galvanised nails, though that would be cheaper!).

Also stay away from any school-age children because they're often carrying the latest school bug.

You could also try giving up marijuana.

Take vitamin C, PLUS zinc. Both are included in the multi vitamins in Boots. Buy the one that says "Multi vitamins, minerals and iron" and take one every day, when you actually get a cold it's pretty much too late.

Oh and learn to cook (it isn't hard) and eat some decent food. Fresh fruit and veg. And make sure you get a decent sleep every night. Wouldn't worry about the beer too much, I drink like a fish and get a cold maybe once every 4 years.

You could also ask your GP for a 'flu vaccination, although they're really meant for old people your GP may take pity on you. Not that it will prevent the common cold of course.

Wash your hands several times a day, try not to put your fingers in or near your mouth so no picking your nose and eating it, even if no ones watching.

The virus that casues flu and colds is transmitted by physical contact with a surface that has been contaminated with the virus rather than being airbourne.

e.g. colleague blows nose, gets some snot on hands, goes to meeting, opens door and in process smears virus infected phlegm all over the door handle. Last person out of meeting closes door transferring some viral phlegm to his hands, he then eats a sandwich at luntime without washing his hands first, thus neatly tranferring the virus from his hands, to his food and to himself.

The same is true for lovely things like hepatitus that you can pick up because some people go for a dump, wipe there backside then don't wash there hands....

Its the microwave meals, fundamentally.

They are shit, you're eating shit, so your body isnt equipped to deal with infection.

Ramp up the booze and drugs, buy a cookbook.

Sorted.

You should stop smoking, immediately.

When I smoked, I had regular colds. I packed up late last year and haven't had a cold. Coincidence? - I think not.

I reckon your immune system is alot stronger if you cut the crap out.

"Lose the wacky backy" was more general health advice, and not so much how to avoid colds. And I would never suggest not drinking, that's crazy talk!

You want him to eat well, then to fill his system with alcohol and drugs? That's daft.
