What is it about spitting?

I followed a bloke in a van this morning, in a traffic jam. Crawling along.

He spat out of the window at about 30 second intervals. Disgusting b*****d. [big]WHY ?[/big]

Is there some territory marking going on here or what? Am I missing the point. Is he 'hard' because he spits?

Never understood it myself.

I can't spit, and I don't want to. Even spitting out toothpaste makes me gag!

Swallowing toothpaste? Ergh! They have a lot of chewing tabbacco in the US... Now that is a disgusting habit! Sit there with their spitoons lobbing into it every few minutes! Ergh, and an Ewww for good measure.

I think spitting has its place (and I don’t mean that in the way most of you are thinking about it), admittedly that isn’t out of a van window however.

Where?

In a sporting arena its possibly defendable due to waste needing to get out but I can't see where else it has a place.

Unless you swallow a bug or similar.

Ist my view as well Liebchen. Have never been able to understand the need to gob all over the place...

It should have a fixed penalty Given the germs in globlet of the spit...ist about "saving lives!

I've never understood why, but at my "school" the ability to "flob" over great distances accorded one far greater peer-respect than any amount of sporting or academic prowess. Boys would habitually and constantly punctuate sentences with a quick spit, or walk along spitting every few yards. Even some of the girls spat in this habitual way

One boy had deformed hands but could hurl spit over the length of the netball court, with acccuracy. Two other boys used to sit at the back of the class, one in each corner, and spit back and forth catching the spit in their mouths and spitting it back and see how long they could keep a rally going for.

I can't believe I've written that but it is completely true.

OMG, this drives me mental. There's a guy who lives in my block who goes out into the car park doing the most disgusting hawking and spitting thing. Vile.

Its only justified if the guy in the van was continually swallowing bugs.

Well chewing tobacco, I suppose some people bight off the ends of cigars as well, seems to often be done by wine and coffee tasters, after chewing gum (preferably into a bin however) and some people can even spit petrol while lit. All of the above I would deem appropriate.

That's not really the same as chucking a flob is it?

A couple of years ago, Trackside and I went greyhound racing with some friends. There was a group of three young lads behind us, and one of them was gobbing up every 30 seconds or so, hawking it up and spitting it out with a resounding splat on the concrete. It made me feel sick, and I had to move away, but after they'd left there was a huge great big puddle of phlegm that must have been 3 foot in diameter.

I did hear somewhere, probably the radio, that there was going to be legislation against spitting because of the spread of T.B.

Strange habit this one. I can't count the times my finacee has called someone to their face 'a disgusting b*****rd' or similar when they take it upon themselves normally in a very public place to spit all over the place.

It's very anti-social, probably why the chavs like it.

Chewing tobacco is the worst. I caddy'd for a summer in Boston and we were out with a fourball one day who all chewed tobacco. One squirt after another squirt all day long squirt. It was disgusting. The squirt Greens were in bits squirt, and the stains could squirt be seen for ages. It was squirt just foul squirtsquirt.

Funnily enough I watched a guy getting battered yesterday for spitting on a car. I stood by and watched cos it seemed fair enough really.
