What is it with that place? It always seems to happen when the tide is out so fighting the fire is next to impossible.

I remember watching the biggie in the 70s, (it still has much of the damage from then) and of course there was the bowling alley too!

The BBC are reporting that it may be arson this time.

If it's not fire, it's being hit by shipping. A very sad day for Southend.

I popped along the seafront this morning at 0510 before my train for a shifters. Only a couple of small glows, couldn't really see much. Really dissapointed as my SLR was in the boot Apparently it was going like a good'un last night. Bugger missed all the action.
Best thing for the pier IMO. Hopefully will stop the horrible pikey scum coming down at the weekends now ?

doesn't anyone find it odd that with all that water around them - they don't have a really good sprinkler system?

i mean, when brighton pier burns down once a year - sprinklers could help - i mean its not like you are going to run out of water?!?

right, Im holding off calling you a retard though the label is suitable :-)

How do you suppose the firefighters get to the end of the pier where the bit they would use to get there is on fire?

The Pier’s fire-fighting facilities have also been substantially upgraded and powerful submersible pumps will now supply the new facilities with seawater.

hmm, it seems to me that the new system didn't work very well...

now, where were we, you were wanting to call me a "retard" for suggesting that they use seawater to put out the fire.

exactly where i was before..

Cos we all know water teleports to where you want it.

So the Pier's on fire. The Firecrews cant get past the burning bit, and any fire fighting water thunderbirds style pumps i would assume have to pump water back from thm the head of the pier, through the burning COLLAPSED bit.
Or the take water from around the pier closer in, and as the tide was out, it would only suck up mud.

No there isn't, it's why the RNLI have a hovercraft launch from shore. Southend is like Morecambe, when the tide goes out it goes very out!

I just remembered, all of the planning in southend is carried out on the basis of "there mustbe's".

It would explain alot.

OK, i'm being misunderstood.

If the end of the pier is still in tidal water, then why not put pumps further out into the estuary. Its no good having a pickup system that only works when the tide is in.

If an external pickup system requires power from the pier itself, why not create a second independant feed from the shore itself. We have deep underwater cables across the atlantic so I'm sure we could create an power cable 3 miles long.

Because that would be the itelligent thing to do. Southend council are run by aload of muppets who would rather spend the local council tax on housing imigrant Kosovans, rather than spending the money on local ammenaties and the areas historic features.

So is there anything left at the end now? There was a new lifeboat station at the very end last time I walked down there (four years ago) but that was about it apart from walkways over the old (1970s) burnt offerings!

And its only a pier not the hanging gardens of babylon, and not worth the money spent such an intricate system.
