G-HEMS was definitely real. As explained above, I saw it in operation in 1999 attending to a (probably) fatal road accident in Wimbledon town centre. The helicopters are run by the London Air Ambulance Service and are operated under the title "Helicopter Emergency Medical Service" (hence HEMS)
G-HEMS was indeed an Aerospatiale AS365 Dauphine and was disposed of in 2001 to Barbados.
Their current helicopter is a McDonnell Douglas MD902 Explorer and is registered G-EHMS. It is based on the roofpad of Royal London Hospital.

A cracking program, remember it well - but then anything involving flight, even those crazy flingwing guys goes down well with me.
HEMS was/is certainly an operational service as has been said but interesting to note, I believe that the German equivalent is actually funded by the Insurance Industry since overall, it lowers their payout...
Food for thought eh?
