Ive been offered a job by a large mobile phone company (who have been chasing me for a year) and are now offering me everything on a plate , pension , healthcare , decent wage etc etc but ... im happy with the comapny im with , i deal with a variety of different things other than handsfree car kits , mainly The AA comms system and phones plus navigation systems , British gas laptops and phones ,and tracking systems for a large company dealing in fleet telematics , thing is although on one hand its a step forward wage wise and genral package is good , im going to be a number on the system , my current job i can ring the boss take the piss out of him , he's a top bloke , but there is no room for improvement im going to be in the same position in 5 years time doing the same job ? its a tough one but im not sure if im going to get bored fitting phonekits day in day out , so do i stick with the lower wage or move on and reap all the extra benefits im being offered and have an easy life ?

Dennis,

I would say go where your heart tells you to go, money is one thing, but being happy in your job takes top priority. You know where you stand with your current boss, and you know that in 5 years time you'll be standing in the same place, but you'll be happy. You mentioned variety, will you get that with the mobile company?

Its a shame that you can't look over the fence before you jump over it, cos just sometimes, the grass isn't green!

I took a 50% cut in wages when I started my company..... best thing I ever did. Money is always attractice but being happy with and enjoying what you spend over half your life doing is IMHO paramount.

Bottom line says it all, "Easy life" thats what I would go for anytime.

I took a job driving a desk once, coz it meant financial security, drove me absolutely nuts in the end, saving grace was when they made me redundant, and I got back offshore doing what I liked best.

Go for the easy life mate.

Where do you see yourself in five years time? Or even ten years time. This is not an easy question. Go for a long walk and think about it...

Go with whatever opportunity offers you you the best chance of getting there. But remember, job satisfaction and enjoyment is worth an awful lot of salary and advancement.

You might also raise your concerns with your prospective employers. If they're worth their salt, it shouldn't do any harm.

Evening, Den. This is a comfortable position!
Ask your current boss what your perspectives are (in a cooperative manner) in your current job. Ask him if he could imagine another position for you that gives you the chance to improve yourself.
He'll then know that you aim for expansion and has the chance to take action accordingly.

If the offered position is as good as your boss' ones - well, see if you could get on with the colleagues in the new job

and thats the biggest problem mate ! is the grass greener ? ive got an interview on tuesday so im going to be asking all the awkward questions i want to know the job is going to be safe , i may be holding myself back in my current job , in the previous one i was fitting trackers to exotic cars astons ferraris etc etc , now im wrking on transits , trucks and rep mobiles like audis bm's etc , in the job im being offered i will be working on the rep mobiles , 3 jobs a day and less traveling , currently im doing anything up to 1500 miles a week ! and i do get pissed off , but everybody in the company is friendly and the boss is the best one anybody could hope for , be a number and have a better package or stay in a company with a family feel , which are qualitys that are hard to find these days , what a dilemma

but how long before your 3jobs a day becomes 5 jobs a day, and your less travelling becomes 2000miles a week?

The problem with big companies is they tend to be run by accoutants, people who only look at the profit margin, and ways to increase it!

I think if I was in your position, I would stay where I was. I prefer the family feel to being a number.

I used to work for a Family, Loved every second of it. Now I'm a number, still love every second, but the people at the top are a family, not shareholders and accountants!

Your right stu , i will show willing i think and go for the interview but turn them down , thing is the industry im in word gets around pretty damn quick if your good , and although im not one to blow my own trumpet i must be pretty damn good to be getting an offer like this one they have been chasing me for a year now whereas pepole have been chasing them for a job , but ive always been a loyal person to the company i work for , and i dont think i will ever get a better boss where ever i go !

Being that you're being offered healthcare, it's definitely not the large mobile phone company I work for (think I know who it is though).

I can't really give any advice, but I can pass on some of my experiences, if it helps. I've been working for the company for 5 years and in that time there has been 5 major restructures, many redundancies and so much changing the organisation for the sake of it, it is ridiculous! I am a very small fish in a very big pond, the company seems to regularly do things to remind everyone how little it cares about us and general moral is rock-bottom. I do get paid reasonably well for what I do, but I don't really enjoy my job and the lack of respect gets to me.

It's certainly not gauranteed to be the same where you're being interviewed for, but the mobile telecomms industry in general is still in a lull at the moment and the problems I'm encountering certainly aren't unique as far as I'm aware.

Sorry if I sound like a miserable git though!

Aaaaaah. Yes that is the company I work for, so everything does apply directly. Does kind of wind me up that you're being offered healthcare though, I certainly haven't ever been and it would have been very useful a couple of years ago (wife had problems, which would have been covered under Orange's healthcare scheme, for example).

Not that it means that the job you're being offered is crap, but overall it's not somewhere I'd recommend for long-term employment.

cheers bud thank you vey much for your input , i think ive made my mind up now , they are offering me a good package but i dont think i could work for such a large company as a number in the system always thinking their is a noose around my neck , sounds stupid but the day i tell my current boss im leaving will be a sad one , he is a top bloke and a biker to boot , i will have words about my current pay i think but the benefits being offered by vodafone just arent enough in my eyes to warrant dropping what ive got , which is happiness in a company that does show some care for it's employees , i do get pissed off but i may be off to france next year on a 3 month jolly fitting phone kits , which is nice

Good stuff, glad I could help.

After 5 years I have realised job satisfaction is worth so much more than good pay and benefits, I'm definitely envious of your position!

Although money isnt everything, doesnt mean to say that a well paid job will be miserable, in time the new job could turn out to be just as friendly as the old job.

Opps sorry, just read rest of the thread.... I moved from big company to a small company and dont regret the move.

Good luck in whatever you decide, Dennnis.

I've seen the company I work for grow to more than double at the site I'm at. The atmosphere has changed and become less personable. After a while I went from feeling that I made a real difference, having so much pride in my work- to not being valued much at all. The enthusiasts and most knowledgeable people have mostly gone and pretty much been replaced by layers and layers of paper pushing management types and lots of bureacracy.
Help is at hand however and I have a plan!

So I can relate to what you're saying....

Well done for making the decision. Now tell your current boss what it was about that job that tempted you - it won't do any harm for him to know that others are after you - and that you turned them down. You never know. That may be part of your next remuneration package review.
