I may be wrong but I thought I heard they were considering allowing 'text speak' to be used by school kids when doing schoolwork!

*edited for clarity.

What, instead of the non-text 'for f**ks sake'?

BTW, I do actually agree with you...

Hmmm

Some friends' kids were 'well astonished' that this old duffer of 38 could understand text speak...

But it's nothing new, decent morse operators have been using similar abbreviations for many years! (Don't ask how many Q codes I had to memorise off pat for my MRGC..!)

Standard morse = CU L8R M8 - err, does that look familiar at all?

Very tempted to send QLF or QAH to the text kiddies... go on, don't dissapoint me, surely some PHer knows those codes?

Send text messages with all spelling and punctuation correct and in place. Well at least try with the punctuation.

Consequently, in the eyes of the younger generation at least, you will be considered as an irredeemable old fart. Naturally this may very well be true.

Then start talking about the Gorillaz and their ilk.

Confuses the hell out of the kids.

My mum discovered text messaging a couple of years back. She refuses to use T9 as it "confuses her" (this woman has a PhD and has her own light aircraft and pilots license and THAT confuses her?!!! )

So now I am subject to a stream of almost totally incomprehensable text messages every now and then.

I am also considering not replying.

Does that menas he gets sin binned for this, even though the whole point of the thread was to stop people using it?

Og course it depends how far you take it, is this a zero tolerence policy? Is lol, FFS, PMSL allowed? If they are, how come 'c u l8r' or other text speak isn't?

We need rules dammit!

I agree

Text messaging should be reserved for forums of spotty faced teenagers.

Text talk on forums = bad bad bad.

I know people seem to feel that it doesn't matter if you're able to post/write in a comprehensive and literate manner but I think it diminishes the content of people's posts if it's full of rubbish spelling and text speak, devoid of decent grammar and a punctuation-free zone.

One of the things I find endlessly amusing (I should get out more) is when people post right wing racist-style rants in a completely illiterate way because it just makes them look even more like a knuckle dragging, monkey headed loser.

Not bad at all, is there nothing that can defeat the knowledge of the PH massive?

QLF is the most often used insult Something along the lines of "Are you sending with your left foot?"

And QAH has been known to be used in a similar fashion - I'm sure you can work out the AH!

(Although confusingly, QAH is a genuine code for "What is my height above...)

I forget just how many I had to learn, but it had to be word perfect (including the various numerical modifiers) and was a real bitch! One of the exams had to be 100% or you failed the lot... yikes!
