Checkout staff who can't count cash????
Discussion
I have just been into my local tesco express for some ciggies and a couple of other bits. I went armed with a £10 bag of 20p peices as i could not be bothered going to a bank.
When i gave the cashier the coin bag and said 'thats £10' he looked puzzled and just stared at it for a while...
Me: you could either trust me that it is £10 or you could wiegh it or you could count it!
Cashier: Hmmm, I am not sure, hold on a second *presses buzzer to call manager*!!!!
Me: Erm, it would be quicker just to count it if you are not sure what to do wouldn't it???
Cashier: I am not very good at counting money but ok...
He took each coin out of the bag one at a time with one hand and placed it in the other hand and then double checked that he had one pounds worth and carefully stacked it up, and went through that procedure ten times! It *must* have taken him about eight minutes.
I am gobsmacked! The guy has been working in that shop for atleast a year and he worked in blockbusters before that so he has a lot of cash handling experience you would think!
Incredible :)

The "Sandwich Van" that arrives on our business park every day features a woman who *really* struggles to add the following: (I have the same every day!)
Can of coke - £0.50
A cob of some description - £1.15 (they are all the same price!)
A small muffin style cake - £0.50
She has to result to a calculator every single day.
Then when you give her a handful of change, that includes coppers, then you may as well buy another meal as well, because you will be starving again by the time she has finished counting it!

I went into my local village shop in my little town in Wales, bought some baccy, few bits of food, anyhow, it came to something like £6.46, I asked for £30 cashback, and this is no word of a lie (I swear on my Tiv!), the young girl working that day (I know her and she's not mega bright.... but bloody hell!!) had to get the calculator out to add £6.46 to £30 so she knew what to type into the visa machine!!
I just stood there gobsmacked!!

wow thats a bargain! Lovely Cob Horse for £1.15!
I've had customers comment on how quick I count their change when they hand it to me! I don't count each coin, but just look at how many coins there are of each type and seem to be able to add that up in my head really quickly.

Just popped down the offi for some beers and there is a notice on the door saying "Closed due to till failure". Dont they teach maths at school these days.
All they have to do is add up what you want to buy, you pay cash and they deduct the amount of goods from the cash and give you the change. They can always ring up the purchases when the till is working again but no they would rather lose a whole evenings takings.
A notice saying cash transaction only is all they need
1) Well I can recall going into a DIY shop for 25 of something at 4p each.
The assistant (blonde young female - sorry girls but true) got out a pocket calculator.
Meanwhile I'm standing there with a pound coin held out in my hand.
After pressing a few buttons and deciding that the calculator had a bat flattery she then attacks the till and presses the 4p key, 25 times.
And more amaxing sounds all surprised when the total came to £1.00p.
2) Occasionally its a pleasure to be given change by one of the old school and not just have the shrapnel dumped in one's hand.
Example £7.38 bill £10 proffered.
Receipt put in hand then as follows,
Coins..........Verbals
. . . . . . . . £7.38
2p . . . . . . .£7.40
10p . . . . . . £7.50
50p . . . . . . £8.00
£2 . . . . . . £10.00 thank you.
Way I was trained in school hols helping out mum.
3) Yorkshire Bank tried an experiment to pay cash by just weighing the notes. So you handed in a cheque for £200 cash say, rather than count out the notes, they would just put a random bundle of notes on the till and hand it across. Asking for it to be counted was met with a blank refusal.
Pointing out the margins of error, and standing there counting the notes far far more slowly than they could caused the experiment to be ditched in my branch.

I wasn't sure you could offer just coins for that amount but it seems you can:

I am suprised you were not beaten to the ground by the people behind you
Cash is cash, the opposite I suppose is handing someone a £50 note and them not accepting it.
Sainburys has a coin counter in the entrance but if you put £10 worth of silver and coppers into it you dont get £10 out. They charge you for changing the money up. So if you had £10 worth of coppers and wanted to buy something for £10 you would have to pay with the coppers
I think perhaps you were a little naive to think that giving checkout-oik a bag full of 20ps could have gone anything other than tits-up!
But, you would think that said checkout-oik would at least be able to count cash a bit quickly...you know, like they can in a bank for example!
(oh, and I'd have joined in with previously mentioned shoeing
)
...except if you're a big bugger, then I'll get my bro onto you
...except if you're a REALLY REALLY big bugger, when I'd have grumpled under my breath, said nothing, and been 8 minutes late to where I was going afterwards

How come they still list Crowns as legal tender?

Dont you hate that when they put the note or receipt in your hand first, then pour the rest of the change on top so it slides off. Give me the change first
There used to be a woman on the till in the work canteen who would add everything up in her head, apply a random factor and then put the vauge total into the "all singing all dancing" digital till
You never paid the same price twice and it was nearly always over but never under what it should have been!
