couple of random health questions for today -

- I cut my finger pretty deeply a week or 2 ago. Its healed over now but the skin is still hard and lumped like theres dry blood beneath the surface. Hows my body going to get rid of that then?

- I managed to end up doing lots and lots of stuff which involved inhaling dust at the weekend. Come monday evening I was having real trouble breathing and coughing lots and tasting blood (erk). Took yesterday off to do nothing and hope it went away... it seems a bit better today, but how? hows my body going to get rid of that stuff?

Oh, and where do babies come from?

Son there are these birds and these bees right......

Well the answer to both scenarios above are the same, it's a process called phagocytosis, which is carried out by macrophages, which are a type of white blood cell that kind of eats up bad things and processes the crap, with enzymes which are found within the cell. Sometimes they can't process stuff, so they surround it with a wall of cells, which becomes a solid lump called a granuloma.

Fortunately not. In most cases, granulomas can sit in various types of tissue harmlessly minding its own business, sometimes it can cause a constant low grade inflammatory response that causes problems, sometimes it can be worse, but most often they are just harmless little lumps.

Thanks 968 I was wondering the same thing myself after I breathed in a fair amount of dust and dirt.

So how does the problem with asbestos work, is it that it cannot be processed by the body?

Ah which explains why splinters go hard and then pop out of their own accord some time later.

Yes that's basically it, although, unfortunately, asbestos can cause the cells of the lung tissue that surrounds it, to undergo a change called dysplasia, which is where the cell type changes, to one of unspecified type, which can become cancerous.......

The walls of the bronchi/oles secrete mucus which is slowly ushered upwards by cilia. Eventually it brings the dust up to your throat where you either swallow it or cough it out.

Taste of blood is a bit bothersome though (unless you were breathing iron dust).
