... I've just been down to a local garage to pick my Mother's Ford Ka up after some minor repairs.
The car was nowhere to be seen. What happened is, we have a local company that looks after the aged that runs dozens of Ford Kas. They sent one of their Polish workers down to pick up a Ford Ka of theirs and the garage gave them the keys to my Mother's car.

So, it's going to be a hard job to track that down. The mechanic didn't feel me with confidence either, he said about the Poilsh workers, "they keep writing cars off because they are not used to MPH and only KPH".

Rather negligent, I thought.

That's absolutely outrageous. I presume the garage are going to be picking up the bill finding/replacing the car and any possessions contained within?

You have my sympathies. Guess you won't be going back there again?

Time to speak to the manager I think.........insist on him giving you the keys to his car, that way he might do something about getting your mother's car back!

Reminds me of my old boss from years ago when I used to sell Austin-Rovers. He was always taking the keys off the board for a demo car and lending them to a freind who wanted a nice car for a day or two. One day he turns up, gets some keys and wanders off again. Later on that day a chap comes to collect his new Montego after its 1st 1000 mile service/check, but our muppet boss has given it to a mate for a fortnights holiday in France. Couldnt get it back, no mobiles or communications stuff in those days.

Are you going to ask for compensation for a) not having the car and b) petrol used and milage/oil/brake fluid used when the car was beinh driven?

Call a local car hire company and find out their daily rate, then tell the garage you'll be charging them the same price!

Blimey where is this place, first they lose a car then the mechanic doesn't even have the decency to feel you properly, shocking...

On a serious note I would consider bringing in the police, car is after all being driven around with no insurance as will not be covered by yours, the garages or the polish employers insurance policies I wouldn't have thought - could be big bills/huge hassle looming if there is a prang.

Ridiculous on the part of the garage, but how is the car currently insured if the other party has a knock or the other nightmare of it going through a speed camera, will they own up if something arrives on your mothers door mat?.....I would go berserk if it was my car.

Threaten them with legal advice - own goal? Probably best to threaten them with legal action!

My boss used to run a Jaguar XJS, he ended up giving the guy his Jag for a fortnight, and unlimited access to the petrol pumps too

This is a very interesting point of insurance law actually, and applies to courtesy cars too where you have to provide your own cover. A courtesy car will be part of the dealers blanket insurance policy, but technically you cannot insure it yourself because another insurance company already has an insurable interest in the car. The idea being to prevent two claims being submitted for the one crunch. If a dealer asks you to insure the loan car, they are supposed to remove the car from their own cover for the duration too.

When I used to work in the car hire business another branch had some real difficulties locating an Astra that had been dropped off by a customer at a dealership when he collected his own car. It took them a few days (and a serious amount of fretting about the possibility it had been nicked) to realise that the dealer had thought it was stock, valeted it, parked it on the forecourt and stickered it up for sale!

Whilst working for a different hire firm I made a day's round trip to collect my manager's new company car from our Heathrow branch. It took a couple of hours of calls/searching the lot for the branch manager to realise his staff had just rented it to an Aussie couple on a three week tour of the UK. My boss went ballistic...
