Giant squids are cool.

Wouldn't want to meet one in a dark alley, mind. A dark underwater alley that is. Don't imagine the fecker would be quite so hard in the back streets of Saarf Lahndaaahn, innit.

"They also recovered one of the giant squid's two longest tentacles, which severed during its struggle."

I read that the suckers where still sucking even after they had got it into the boat, is when they were not attched to the squid

There is something at the end of the line I think. maybe that is a control, and they can use that to measure the bloody thing! Either way, its a friggin monster.. I wonder how one of those would fare against a great white, or an Killer Whale?? (Purely the kiddy coming out in me!)

Well given that Sperm whales eat them, I would guess that an Killer whale would still come out on top.

Versus a great white that would be interesting ( as they're only about 1/2 size of a killer whale).

I wonder what they baited it with?

The giant squid is by no means the largest known. Several other species, including the colossal squid Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni, are thought to grow larger.

They got scale form the line (known length) as well as the tentacle tip they hooked.

He wouldn't like this as he has a thing about underwater photographers. Odd because he's such a tolerant chap in other ways.

Sperm whales are a lot bigger than Killer whales are are the biggest carnivore in the sea. In other words if it wanted to it could kill and eat a Killer whale for breakfast.

Sperm Whales have been seen and found with massive scars across their noses caused by the suckers and spines in the suckers of giant squid
