A few years ago, if you pushed the eject button on a VCR or CD player, the tape/cd was ejected more or less instantly, maybe a second or two delay tops.

On pretty much all the latest stuff, the time delay is excrutiatingly slow, 10-15 seconds. I have a new combined VCR/DVD player, I have to hit the eject and then leave the room and do something else before I lose my temper the eject is so slow. Same with our new CD player, several seconds compared to immediate with the old one we had.

I was wandering around an electrical superstore the other day and there was a loose DVD disc on top of a DVD player, so I popped it into every machine I could find, all so so slow. Sales assistant wanders over, I ask the question, and he agrees, said he had an old Sony CD player at home, instantaneous eject, but the new stuff is really slow.

Why? it's really annoying!

Try a Toshiba DVD-RAM recorder - if you want to eject a disc when the machine is off, it takes 45 secs to load, then 45 secs to unload!

I was thinking that the other day, I have a Toshiba DVD player which you can turn on by pressing the eject button, thus saving you from pressing the "On" button and then the "Eject" button

Only problem is that it still takes fg ages as it has to display "HELLO...WELCOME TO TOSHIBA DVD" or some such nonsense accross it's little LCD display...Why?

nice DVD player though

Our DVD player at home is exactly the same, but as my 5 year old daughter uses it more than me, I'm not too bothered.
The power switch on my Alpine car stereo, though drives me nuts, you have to hold it in for at least 10 seconds to switch the darn thing off. I hate it!!!!!

Just remmembered, my LG CD re-writer for my PC disables the eject button when you insert a CD-RW

For months I was having to reboot the PC in order to eject CD-RWs when the BIOS screen was being displayed, because as soon as it went into Windows it would disable the eject again

didn't realise you had to right click an icon in the systray to eject the damn things

Probably because the switch action is interpreted by a software program which then decides on the appropriate action.

I think part of the reason is that the disc needs to be stopped spinning, especially on high speed drives. If you try to eject when its going flat out it takes ages, try when its stopped and its only a second or two delay. Those players that don't use a tray, say like a Playstation or something you just pop the top instantly and stop it spinning by hand

Also some of the rewritable stuff needs various blackmagic worked on it before you stop using it to make sure if doesn't screw the data up.

Try a Phillips DVD recorder:
The 'Quick record' function takes about 35 seconds to START recording!!! And why is it that it takes forever to try and work around the menu systems?

On the bright side though, after pickled fish and cornbites the night before, a modern toilet enables you to avert your eyes and with a quick snap of the wrist your package is on its way I even have a TVR handbrake handle on my flusher, which ads to the fun (and power) of the event

You had to roll up your sleeves to get an old toilet to flush, pumping the handle furiously like a maniac, whilst the bowl bubbled and churned the contents around like an undustrial mixer before swallowing half, burping-choking itself and then running out of water.

Edited to add my point, which is: most things do get better as time goes on!

My old DVD player insists on "welcoming me to DVD world" everytime I switch it on. Drives me nuts.

Not to mention the DVD format itself. Stick an old video in and you can wind it on to the start of the film. ith DVD's, you have five minutes of intros before you ever see the main menu. Aaargh!

It's an attempt to reintroduce the virtue of patience back into everyday life. We all expect far too much far too quickly.

I think it's a good idea - cool man

Its a good question.

But then we come from a time when you graded the quality of a tape deck by the smoothness of its ejection mechanism...

And why is broadband at 2 Meg no faster than it is at 1 Meg. Another con.

Because most servers cant serve information as fast as your line can pull it down. An 8 meg connection is megafast, but you wont be able to make use of the full speed, 9 times out of 10.

Its twice as fast, just usually limited by the connection at the other end.

Use a P2P client and you will see the difference, I was getting something in the other day at 231k/sec

Yes that is true, but try and tell people who download movies (ahem) that [simplisticly] it is the 'other end' that is causing the bottleneck.

Jeeez - I just spent 5 minutes watching Bedford Rascal's angry smiley.

Can't that thing go any faster?
