I suspect the whole western 'chinese food' propaganda is a farce. If you had deep fried shredded crispy szechwan 'dripping in oil' anything every day, you'd drop down dead with a heart attack before you hit 30.

Chinese food in the west isn't "real" chinese food, it is similiar though. To an average chinese person it tastes like crap, or so i've been told.

I guess it's a bit like when you go to a foreign country and try an english breakfast or whatever, it is similiar but not quite the same.

I hang out in Chinatown a lot (I'm ticking off every restaurant there) and see plenty of chinese people eating the usual chinese grub, but they do seem to have different stuff on their plates too. Also in china they eat snake and dog, which wouldn't go down too well. I'd have a go with snake but I'd draw the line at dog-meat.

yeah chinese food can be fattening, thats why the rich ones are fat, the poor ones eat basically plain rice with a bit of fish and some vegetables, at least thats what the chinese guy at work used to have. Most of the fried chinese food you get a takeaway is just as bad for you as any other fast food, so dont kid yourself its healthy.

SE Asian stuff is probably better for you with more stir fries and the like.

Normal Chinese people do basically eat rice as far as I could see when I was there. Good Chinese restaurants in Britain are similar to good restaurants in Beijing but with slightly less exotic ingredients as has been already said. The local Chinese takeaway bares no relation.

My aunt is Phillipino, and the food she does is fantastic.
