Had a great night in last night by myself as the rest of the family were out, so played some old discs. My favourite rock bands are The Who and Led Zepplin. So while enjoying some good wine and listening to some great music I thought of combining the 2 groups to make one super group, ie to make a band of 4 or 5 players from the combined 8. Who would you choose?
I would go for:
Drums: Keith Moon
Bass: John Entwhistle
Guitar: Jimmy Page
Vocals: Cann't decide, so joint Roger Daltrey and Robert Plant.
Comments/decisions please.

Easy one here ....

Drums: Bonzo
Bass: JPJ
Guitar: Jimmy Page
Vocals: Robert Plant

I think they'd make the best rock band

ok ok .... add Keith moon on mouth organ then.

Actually I have to confess - I think Led Zep are brilliant, but I have absolutely no time whatsoever for the Who.

I don't even rate Townsend as a Guitar God.

Dunno why - just never ever did anything for me.

Kinky is right, I'm afraid the Who are second rate compared with Led Zeppelin.

In Led Zeppelin the band members complimented each other perfectly.

The Who had a some good tunes though.

I've got a Led Zep concert bootleg where Keith Moon does a guest spot. Haven't listened to it in years.

Agree with kinky here. The Who, whilst quite good, are simply not in the same league as Zeppelin.

I mean how can you compare Townsend with Page?

The Who were a class act, everyone raved on about Townsend and Daltery, yet it was Moon and Entwistle that made the band. I'm currently reading Moons Biography and it makes it clear that Entwistle was by far the most talented bassist of his time. As for Moon, well he is the man responsible for making the drummer a frontman rather than a someone stuck at the back of the stage.

Schenker might be an arrogant so and so, but he still can cut it..

If you don't like Schenker, substitute Vai or Satriani.....

Keith Moon named Led Zepplin after telling the band who were initially playing as The New Yarbirds that they would go down like a Lead Zeppelin. (ie Lead Balloon). The name got changed slightly and stuck. Keith always had close links with the band.

CelticPilgrim, you can put together as many supergroups as you like but unless they gel together they will not work, this is where Led Zeppelin suceeded - they were after all the first rock supergroup. another success would be Bad Company (one of the first stadium only rock bands!), who coincidently released some LPs on Zeppelin's Swansong label.

But Gillan, Coverdale, Schenker, etc all have their moments of brilliance but none have had the staying power at the top. Led Zeppelin were at the top of the pile for 12 years, with 10 albums of which 8 reached No.1 and 2 reached no.4 (Led Zep I and Coda)

Gary Moore though very under-rated and one my favourite guitarists.

Clearly some of you are not aware of the origins of Led Zep.

And who came up with the name.

And who the hell was Nicky Hopkins?

Nicky Hopkins - Might he have played with Page with Screaming Lord Sutch and might he have played keyboards on the Who's first LP??????

davidy...

I agree wholeheartedly with you about Led Zep, I was just throwing something else into the mix...

I'm glad you agree about Gary Moore though...

is that the book titled 'Dear boy - the Keith Moon story' ?........if so , cracking read.....he WAS a loon was Moon, always tried a little too hard to impress.....drumming was unorthodox but really drove the band along with Entwistle's relentless bass playing...Daltrey was a great lead singer and Townsend was the creativity......truly great rock band

Led Zepp.....different playing field altogether......they were THE rock band and always will be

I saw Led Zeppelin several times in their prime, Earls Court '75, both Knebworths in '79, Page/Plant umpteen times since, and my brother is bass guitarist in probably the UK's finest and most authentic tribute group.....

For everything Zep, try Dave Lewis's internet site "Tight but loose"....

Then have a feast on these.......
