The other half and I are thinking of going over to the continent for their christmas markets. We have narowed it down to two, the Black Forest and Vienna. We can't decide, we're looking for the one that has the most christmasy feel to it...does it snow in Decmber in the two?
Anyone been there over the christmas period? Any great places to stay?

Well I was in the Black Forest on holiday a couple of weeks ago,(whilst staying in Stuttgart) I can really recommend Triberg, a lovely town with the highest waterfalls in Germany, and shops with traditional cuckoo clocks everywhere, I would imagine Christmas would be pretty special there.........

Living in Germany (southern Black Forest) I can only undeline what WackyRAcer has said.... Triberg is great and the real Cuckoo Clocks (these are NOT Swiss, never were!), you should also visit Freiburg and Furtwangen. great roads and good food. If you need any more contact me offline...

there are also good christmas markets in Helsinki and in Tallin (estonia). It's feasible to visit both - shortish ferry journey between the two cities (though the fast ferries don't run in the winter). There will almost certainly be snow.

I know nothing about either of these markets but Vienna sounds nice

Liebchen - they are all a lot of fun. Vienna can be magic - but ist a busy town too.

Has one around the Prater too. Does snow - but find Vienna too much of a "Hauptstadt" for this kind of fun. Is an official tourist one - but the best ones are the little more private ones in the little ginnels in town centre.

So my preference for chill out und mulled wine und Lebkuchen on the "claws" - would be Black Forest - full of dinky little village fests - und Freiburg/Titisee/Triberg / Baden-Baden along the wine road there - but where lot of other big possibles too within reach - Stuttgart - oldest und largest one of all - very colourful - all around Alte Schloss und Schillerplatz...Also Munich in easy reach too - Official Tourist Board on - Mareinplatz - but like Wien - number of little und private ones dotted around the town.

Und also ist possible to nip to Colmar/Strasbourg und Riquewihr to see their Christmas market if time. Black Forest - thus a better choice.

Jaja - JMGS4 Liebchen... the Black Forest invented the cuckoo clock - but the Swiss made in work with the precision und accuracy!
