Hi Guys,

Little sister is trying to get her application sorted for a BA in Business Studies with a view to taking accountancy as well.

I suggested she takes the technical exams and gets into work quicker but she insists she wants to go the whole hog

Trouble is, how can you make an application stand out from the hundreds recieved?

We are working on her personal statement, what should she include.

She has it typed up but it does read quite generically.

Uni of choice is Christchurch at Canterbury if thats of any relevance

Any help appreciated, thanks

I applied to do Business Economics and Economics Cardiff/Exeter/Oxford Brookes amongst the candidates and got accepted to all. I'd be happy to mail you my personal statement if you like but would like it kept private. Generally you need to explain why you want to do the course, then tell them they why they want you by pushing your extra-curricular activites and explaining how they've given you extra skills. I had a friend who was a total swot and got 4As but got rejected from every single uni and i'd guess it's because she came across as a bit of a nerd.

Cheers,
Rob.

Brilliant, good start there. If you don't mind that may be useful. Mail me through my profile.

We'll just change the name at the top

I would suggest for her to get some relevant work experience done to show she is willing and genuinely interested towards her chosen discipline, as its too bloody easy to apply for courses, but for most of the time, you need that extra "edge" over your run of the mill candidate to stay in the recruiters/selectors mind when it comes to making a choice...

Work experience would be a very good idea, it shows you are serious. Lie if you have to, they will never check up

Is she applying for next year 2006 entry? Be aware that entries have hit a peak this year, as next year the old top up fees come in. Most uni's are expecting a sizeable drop in applications as those who may have deffered entry till then have gone this october instead.

As an ex-lecturer and course leader at Degree level I used to read lots of applications.

I would say this:

The applications that stood out were the ones that talked about any extra-curricular relevant experience, showed a genuine interest and desire to pursue a career in the degree field, and expressed a willingness and ability to learn.

Hope that helps,
Alex

Extra curricular activities and experience beyond doing well in exams are paramount on the personal statement. I talekd about work I had done for charity at a few major events and the ways I raised money for charity on a day to day basis (a few postage stamps and printer cartridges go a long way!)
Just make sure as was said earlier that you don't focus purely on school achievements and nothing else - universities want rounded individuals with lots to offer! Good luck with the application!

Hi,
I am starting uni this year and I got accepted almost purely on my statement/interveiw (my results were ok but not want the uni usually asks for). I talked about my work experience which I had found myself and done in my schoool/college holidays. I also talked about how much I enjoyed and was interested in the subject (motorsport). If she doesn't yet have any experience she still has time to get some, the application won't have to be in until after xmas, she could also state any experience she is planning to do maybe in the long holiday before uni. If possible try to get some good references from anything she has done before, make it link to the subject even if doesn't!
