Just to throw the cat amongst the pigs .... the reason so many people are suspicious of the Conservative Party is because they think that the real priority is not to have a free, capitalist society with everyone having an equal chance to achieve, but to maintain the current status quo, and protect those that already have power. It is strange how many people with right wing views are so reluctant to accept that they started with an advantage in life, and complete equally with everyone else.

How about we get rid of the Monarchy, public schools, private health and let anyone into the UK that wants to come in. And 100% inheritance tax too. Lets all fight for our place.

That is a socialist approach to the problem.

A free market approach would be to achieve equality of opportunity not of outcome. For example by improving state schools.

Suerely what I am suggesting is "equality of opportunity". The outcome would depend on a persons abilities compared to others. It would hopefully not be affected by the abilities of a person's ancestors.

How is abolishing private health achieving 'equality of opportunity'?, and as for getting rid of private schools that is levelling down rather than raising up standards in the state sector.

As they say in Kamchatka, you can f@ck right off, old bean.

Socialism is a condition peculiar to the peasant minded, itself a condition entirely unrelated to class, socio-economic status or birthright in general but a safeguard against any endeavour likely to raise a sweat or better the condition of man beyond the culturing of formidable wind breaking or general displays of knuckle scrapage.

To wit, David Davis has risen to a position of primary squirearchy despite extremely humble beginnings.

Of course, what he, I and any decent fellow accepts, is our place in respect of the greater societal order, namely ito the nobility and ultimately, Betty Regina.

The concept of any individual's life's work going anywhere other than a 'destination' of their choice (i.e. sprogs) - assuming there be anything left following life's rich duvet of wine, women & amateur dramatics, principally via the revolting incidence of inheritance theft, is truly a cause for civil war.

It's funny how die hard socialists are obsessed with tking money from those whom they perceive to have so unjustly acquired such excess.

The equation is rampagingly clear:

Socialism = The Politics of Envy.

Perhaps Private health is not all that relevant, but I think Private schools are. I'm suggesting ways of stopping children benefit so much from their parents wealth - to the detriment of others.

I'm surpised I am not getting much positive feedback on a site where people go on so much about how folk should be rewarded for their own hard work.

Because you are forgeting one important factor freedom , in particular the freedom to send your children where you want to school.

Now I favour a voucher system to drastically improve state education, that is the opposite of what you a preposing, parent power rather than stifling state control.

However I am in favour of IHT (but certainly not at 100%)

Quiet honestly this attitude from left wing lentists makes me sick .. I started with nothing worked harder and longer than 99.99% of people and resent every pound taken from me in tax, I see the state as a cash cow for lefties, scroungers which needs disbanding asap.

If we did not offer the scum of the earth free houses and benefits as soon as they jump over the border perhaps we would not have the terrorist problems we now have.

We are now in a global economy and we have to compete to have any standard of life, you should read about Germany once the power house of european economy now with mass unemployment and unable to meet the social security payment and retirement bills thanks to loony leftwing policies
Interestingly they are now looking for a Maggie Thatcher change in social attitude. Even the french whisper that the English way is best

Bet your wife and kids will thank you for that one. Does that mean they will have to pay for your funeral out of their own money or if they are a bit skint they can just dump your body somewhere

So you work hard all your life to better yourself & hopefully give your children all that you never had as a child & that is considered a bad thing ?

Hmmmmm.........

Just because our vast bloated Welfare State "rewards" those who avoid work & soap in equal measures, doesnt mean that the children of those who have attempted to make something of their existance, as opposed to being a tax cow for Mr Brown et al, should be penalised for the privilege.

As for Inheritance Tax, have yet to hear one valid reason as to why upon death, the money you have earned & been taxed upon once, should be greedily taken again by the all too vociferous State.

The problem with the Conservatives is they do not understand Business.

Mrs Thatcher's economic policy wreaked this once great country now all we produce is people on benefits and service sector which serves the people on benefits.

Sorry to go on here but I personnally feel the only way to make Britian a great country is to move from a nation of Shopkeepers to a Nation of Innovators.

john75.

Trust the last comment was made with tongue firmly twixt jeek & jowel ?

If it wasnt for Thatcher & her (justifiable) hard line approach to the marauding, restrictive & anti work Unions in the 70's, then this Country would have gone to the wall years ago, though to be fair Blair is attempting to turn back the economic clock regardless.

As for the Welfare State, again the kind Mr Blair, (with our money lest we forget) is happily spending unsustainable amounts of the increasingly minority working populace's Tax on the ever burgeoning members of Society who wont/cant work. If memory serves me right, the Conservatives attempted (only partially succesfully) to reduce the Nations dependancy on State Benefits.

hmmmm well a well thought out cogent political argument there minicity If we devided the country's wealth exactly so that every person had say £20K and set off as complete equals within 10 years there would be some incredibly welathy people and some with nothing, thieving off those that had looked after their opportunities. Your system proposes we punish those who have had the nous to do well while rewarding the no marks...

I think any claim about maintaining the status quo is bolloxs as well. There are a tiny number of people who live off old money while the vast majority are cast into the sea of employment and either actively seek out advancement through hard work and the gaining of skills or end up stacking shelves for the rest of their lives. Labour want to change this my crippling the go-getter and helping the n'er do well. The conservatives want to promote a society that strives for advancement i.e. helping thoose who help themselves. vive le revolution....

Toffs is all the same
I think that you will find that there are many more successful people in this world that started with no help from an inheritance/priveledge and built their businesses by the sweat of their own brow. The overriding ambition is to make their life and those of their family better than the life of their parents.

Yes, people should benefit from their own hard work. If you take that goal away, you stifle innovation. There is no need to have the drive for success as the State will provide all.

The only problem with this theory is that it is a chicken and the egg problem. Without successful businesses and the taxes that they pay, the State has no income. At that point, the whole theory collapses.

I am just curious, why is it, automatically, assumed by socialists that successful people are only the result of priveledge?

Do you want a better life? Do you want success? Go out and get it. Nobody is stopping you.

ErnestM

PS: Also, nobody is stopping you from willing all of your assets to "the people" upon your death. I wouldn't let your wife see the will, however.

I am slightly concerned though to see the unemployed being roundly dismissed as dirty (!) worthless scroungers. Sure, there are some who won't work but there are a fair proportion who are jobless through no fault of their own.
