We went to PC World at the weekend to pick up a portable MP3 player as a birthday present for the wife. She insisted on coming too, so she could choose one she liked.

Now I am already getting her a number of other presents, so I was thinking of spending around £50, and low and behold they had lot's of nice looking MP3 players with LCD screens and 512 MB or 1GB of capacity at or slightly above that price. I informed the salesman of the price range I was looking for and what does he do, he fishes out a Mini Ipod, which cost £140!!. Of course the wife loved the look of it, so that's what I had to get, but does she need 2GB of storage capacity?

I mean how many songs is she planning on storing on it, I will be surprised if it is more than 50 or so.

What is so special about a mini-Ipod that you should pay double the price for them?

No reason other than the trendy have picked up on em and everyone has this intrinsic belief that somehow they're a bit 'better'.

Probably the best sales of anything apple have ever done...but im pleased to say it'll be business as usual soon as they may be about to go the way of Betamax. Great to use but they refuse to be compatible with everything.

Anyway - the enw iPod nano has got to be the one to get 1000 songs, and it's teeny weeny weeny (and cheaper. i think)

Your first mistake was taking your wife shopping for her Birthday present.

Cos if they see your not buying the most expensive thing in the shop, youre a tight wad.

..... ah, I remember the days..... "...I'll never fill that".....

2 weeks later - need to upgrade...... just you wait and see..... insidious things - recommend you change the headphones though. The "mug me" standard ones go down very well at pub sales - I know 3 people in the last few months who have had theirs nicked.....

Care to explain the "refuse to be compatible with everything"? If you're gonna go on about OGG Vorbis, then bear in mind that Betamax was regarded as the superior technology at the time, but it was the inferior VHS that won...

Although agree with you about the Nano. Superb little piece of kit.

I see about a dozen people a tube-trip with white headphones on. I don't think you are particularly picked out for having "ipod" headphones any more (since they may just be connected to a shuffle). The ipod used to be expensive and exclusive (PITA getting hold of them originally) now they're just expensive. I sincerely doubt you would get much for a stolen ipod these days (especially a "mini".

You found a salesman at PC World?

Wouldnt have happened at Derby, all you get there is a big queue at just the one checkout open, no staff to help even when you go looking for one they are involved with someone already and there are another six hundred folks waiting for them ahead of you. Oh, and a big security gaurd sat up high at the door on some sort of chrome and glass podium like a hi-tech tribal chief out of King Solomans Mines.

Can you please outline the similarities between your two examples, concentrating on the bit where a proprietary hardware design compares to an open software codec? Thank you.

I had a 40GB Archos Jukebox (was a 20GB but swapped out the hard drive ) and that recently died perminantly, so I brought an Archos GMini. Fantastic device, easy to use, 20GB space, very small very good on battery life and only £130 from Currys as ex-display model (not a single mark / fingerprint on it!)

Ipods are a fashion accessory which requires you to convert to THEIR format rather than play native MP3's etc.

It's big memory/good playback you want for your lossless CDs.

Otherwise it's just compromised musak you're listening to.

Erm...you can play native mp3s on iPods. I have nothing but on mine.
