I'll raise you - Chester (really).

A clean city centre, nice walk by the river, also a brass band playing then a stroll though a very nice park where my daughter got to feed the squirals some nuts, they ate right out of her hand. Nice atmostphere, happy folk strolling about and virtually chav free.

There are many parts of Britain where the old country survives; showing us how things were before the Chav hordes overran the country.

Glad to see that there is someone else out there that can see what i see,my parents retired down there some years ago and i visit them on a regular bassis,i too find it refreshing down there(New Forest-Christchurch through to Poole area),very clean and in someways its like stepping back in time,e.g,the winter gardens with the band playing.
If you like American cars and are in the Poole/Bournemouth area any sunday afternoon of the year try Constitution Hill,it is a high point that has a tea bar and parking area with panoramic views of the harbour and surrounding countryside and its place where American car enthusiasts gather with a range of cars from different eras.

My Grandfather was once offered Sandbanks - all of it - for a couple of hundred pounds. But he turned it down on the basis that you couldn't grow anything there it it might wash away with the next storm.

Even when I was little most of the places there were little single storey clapboard chalets, rather wonderful really. I'm glad you liked it, but I think it's horrid now. Same with Poole Quay. I remember when you could get pissed in the Jolly Sailor, beaten up by Marines in Corkers Wine Bar (not that I ever did), get a kebab from Bunny's takeway and still have change from a fiver...

Quite. But £200 (or whatever it was - another version has it at £140) was a great deal of money in those days.

I absolutely love Bournmouth, oh

Spent a long weekend down there for a Stag-do and I was absolutely amazed at just how nice Bournmouth is.

It has all the beaches, parks etc that you could want and a vast amount of bars, clubs, restaurants and 'special bars' that you could ever need on a Stag-do!
then

There was absolutely no trouble all weekend (unlike around here) and I even found a huge party on the beach at 4am one morning whilst trying to find my way back to the hotel!

I think that it was an annual student gathering which I happened to gatecrash. Oh and it was fancy dress, so staggering down to the beach a bit worse for wear and at that time to be confronted by Storm Troopers, Pirates and Cowboys was quite surreal!

Last time I was in Bournemouth (I visit a lot as my GF if from there), we were sunbathing in the park when a very fit charity collector in a micro skirt walked up, stood next to my head and asked if i'd like to donate to Cancer Research! I found it impossible to resist. (For those of you wondering it was a pink thong).

Long live Bournmeouth!

The only problem with Bournemouth is that Rico is now living down there as well!

Its a good mix of old and young!

There are plenty of nice places in Britain, but you've got to look for places that are either 'a bit posh' or 'a bit old-fashioned'. (bear in mind that 'a bit posh' includes London).

Seriously, Chavs hate all things old and all things respectable, so places like Chester, York, Bath and so on are beautiful locations for nice days out. They're also rather agreeable to live in.

The country's metropoli are also enjoyable in a different way. There are fewer chavs in central Manchester, London, Newcastle etc because they simply can't afford to 'hang about' there, giving you time to appreciate the architecture and sights.

Chavs seem to infest the identikit-towns people have been complaining about. The facelessly commercial semi-suburban backwaters like Stockport, Dudley and Romford. F**k-all to do, you see.

Also, anywhere that plugs its 'industrial heritage' is to be avoided. This means it'll be full of bleak, forbidding factories converted into bleak, forbidding museums that no-one goes to; no local industry left either so lots of unemployed people as well.

I can't understand preserved factories at all. We preserve Victorian mills and I notice we've started preserving inter-war light engineering factories as well. Does that mean we'll be preserving call centres in a hundred years time?

I went to uni there and loved it, it has changed a bit since then with more bars and clubs but as said its full of nice (and good looking) people. During the summer was great, endless hen parties and holiday makers, 7 miles of sandy beaches, loads of bars. If you were bored then just jump in a cab to the durley inn and sink a few by the beach.

Top place.

I must admit I hace a soft spot for vitorian industrial buildings. At that time industry was held in repsect and a lot of the buildings have had real care and craftmanship lavished on them. The same goes for victorian water works.

Fair enough, I'm just thinking of Stockport.

To all intents and purposes, it's a concrete shithole full of chavs and identikit shops.

Its only salvation lies in its pathetic attempts at 'tourism', which revolve entirely around industrial heritage, except that it just serves to reinforce the image of it being a concrete shithole. There's a Hatting museum (which no-one goes to because it's stretching a very thin concept even thinner), a few historic buildings with nothing in them, and the fact that it's got a 'historic market', meaning that it's got a market - just housed in an old hall.

Its heritage was bleak and its still bleak, to the point where its tried purloining attractions from Cheshire, such as Bramhall Hall and Quarry Bank Mill.

I think it just has to accept that, so far as tourism goes it's got nothing going for it, and it's got to offer something new and interesting. Except that it can't be bothered.

Agree, we had a week in Dartmouth recently and it was very pleasant, visited Paignton on the train, it was like Chav Central, only a few miles away from Dartmouth, different planet though.

Dont worry, it'll have an Ikea soon, and 10 mile tailbacks on the M60.
