It's good that the death sentence isn't an option when you read stories like this!

Why do we want to monitor them any way?...........let them bump each other off, save the country some money and may be even act as a bit of a deterent to committing crimes anyway (OK possibly a little optomistic there).

Less of this Nanny state rubbish - actions have consiquences deal with it !

Yes have no doubt a compensation claim (funded by the Tax payers) will now follow...........just like it did when Peter Sutcliffe was assaulted whilst in Broadmoor.

He received nearly £180,000 !! (yes, youve guessed it again, funded by the Tax payer). Only saving grace for that one is that (hopefully) no Home Secretary will be foolish enough to release the bar steward in the first instance to spend his monies. How supremely ironic that the survivors of Sutcliffes attacks, with hammers & screwdrivers et al, received the enquivalent of £10,000 from the Criminal Inhuries Compensation Board.

"While staff monitor prisoners carefully, high security prisoners are, by nature, a particularly challenging group to manage and while staff are always vigilant, it's impossible to prevent incidents of this nature occasionally happening."

I'm sure it's easily arranged that a prisoner gets some scalding water and officers "don't see it happening".

Ought to be done more often if we must keep the barstools alive.
