No one ever told me at school why some bees are big fat hairy black things while others look like brown wasps. Whats that all about then?

Sounds like you're talking about bumble bees (fat, hairy, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bumblebee ) and honey bees (smaller, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honeybee ). Unsurprisingly, honey bees are the ones we get honey from.

they are indeed the nuts. and very amusing when they get a bit pissed on sunflowers and fall over...always funny to find an insect thatc an actually fall voer!

We had something fly into our pool a few weeks back which i rescued and have no idea what it was - absolutely masive (at least three times size of big bumblebee)...jet black, VERY furry, and a very orange bottom! It spent ages drying itself and sitting on my boot before zooming off!

The thing with bumblers is that if you leave 'em to it, they don't give you any grief (unlike wasps ). I spent ages taking macro shots of some on flowers a few weekends ago. Really cool to see them close up... sat there and it suddenly disappeared... damn thing was humping the lens...
