Why are schools and exam boards so anti-car?
Discussion
Is there an explanation for this, or is it just me? My English GCSE pre release material and exam was based on how terrible cars are and how they are going to pollute the world and kill us all. Then today in Economics, someone asked about the price of petrol and the teacher went on about how cars were a non merit good and how they pollute the environment, use up finite resources wastefully, ruin our roads and countryside, etc etc and a load of other hippy bull:censored:.
So I said that surely cars were a merit good, as the British economy would not developed to what it is today without people being able to get around the country easily without relying on the failing transport. "Ok, I guess thats a valid point". Cue more bull:censored: about how fuel tax and road tax were all good as they "compensate" other people and the effects of cars.
"But surely Sir" I asked, "cars are not to blame, this chart on the wall shows that airplanes are the most polluting type of vehicle by far and yet they do not pay tax on aviation fuel, so surely car drivers are being victimised by having to overcompensate for other forms of transport like this?" He couldn't get out of that one, so swiftly got back onto the lesson plan:D
But back to the point, why is the education system trying to show that cars are basically the root of all evil?

Well most of this is quite accurate.
If no one comes up with a viable alternative to the petrol powered combustion engine soon the whole world is going to have a big problem on its hands.
However, in responce to your original question, I don't think its possible to single out schools as being 'anti car'.
Interesting thread this....I immediatley thought of an earlier thread on P&P... Most useful thing you weren't taught at school ...
What you've being taught at school is correct...what you're not being taught is that, your money goes when you buy a car, when you're young and have a car...you get lots of friends, cars are a pain in the arse when they break down, cars are FUN,....the list goes on lol

Teachers tend not to be able to afford nice cars.
Yeah, but they do have nice holidays to enjoy their old wrecks.
I have the marxist view (and I'm a right winger) of selling my time, I had to teach as I'm not prepared to sell any more of my time, regardless of the price
I'd rather have a shit car and time to enjoy it than a great car and no time (like so many of my chums), those I do respect are the rare breed who manage to achieve both.

Good chance to show your excellent essay skills then by demonstrating the opposite point of view then?
Nah the answer they have is that cars are bad, and anyone who disagrees is beyond education.
Sounds like as good a reason as any to remove yourself from the clutches of the brainwashin...I mean education system

The teacher said that over the past 2 weeks hes been going into town just to go down to the Quayside on a new electric bus, "because its great fun!
"
You might want to ask him where he thinks the electricity for the bus comes from?
Given all his unnecessary journeys he is using up finite resources and should obviously be strung up!
I've already put on record that if the school that my girlfriends kids go to, start brainwashing them with anti-car stuff, that I'm going to take them to as many trackdays and motor racing events that they'll be extolling virtues of internal combustion based transport to all and sundry!
I'm also prepped and ready to march into the school demanding why they are teaching kids that cars are evil and people who speed are bad. I'm gonna bring these two up right

From simple motion to complex frames, the car is a great example of how engineering has develop and responded to the changes that have taken place in society over the last 100+ years.
Is there an explanation for this, or is it just me?
I would imagine many people who have trained in styling/advertising industries have also used aircraft, trains and cars to demonstrate how public demands and tastes have changed.

Because they (they being the education departments and somne teachers) are bunch of joghurt-knitting Birkenstock-wearing Grauniad-reading greenparty-voting lentilists who are only in a job because bLAIR and fatty2Jags have created jobs for out of work communist ex-tradeunionists who are too dumb to ask the correct questions of the system.
OK exagerated somewhat, and no offence meant to the few (all two of them) hard working conservative teachers that there are!

Just back from not being here so this is a bit late now, but it's inaccurate in two ways. First way, there are many 'renewable' fuels that an internal combustion engine can work on quite happily. Second way, the products of clean combustion - and you can get that easily these days - are plant food and water, so you drive along and feed the world.
If you're referring to the tissue of lies with free cr@p thrown in and mixed with total b0ll0x plus a large dose of bull5h1t that passes as man-made global warming theory, the Fiends of the Earth and Greenpeas websites are there should you start to feel less guilty about existing.
If on the other hand this is about markets and the greed / fear thing, then maybe you have a point
