Various of us have been having a nice time arguing about whether our current government is centre-right/closet socialist etc on the Clarke and NorthSea Oil threads.

Someone posted the link below on the Safe Speed forums:

www.politicalcompass.org/

Is has a test you can take which score you on L/R and Authoritarian/Libertarian axes, and has a chart showing the position of various people (historic and current). I make NO claims for it being correct thought!

I thought it might entertain PHers for a bit.

(See www.digitalronin.f2s.com/politicalcompass/extremeright.php for current parties)

I came out as described, extreme left libertarian with scores of:

Economic: Left/Right: -6.63
Social: Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.23

you are more left wing than me and we are at opposite ends of the Libertarian/Authoritarian scale - i am an Authoritarian.

my score

Economic Left/Right: -2.63
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 3.54

not too sure about the wording of questions though, id consider mysef right wing yet i think most of the questions sort of funnled you into giving left wing answers.
e.g. "If economic globalisation is inevitable, it should primarily serve humanity rather than the interests of trans-national corporations"

nobody is going to say profits are more important than the good of humanity, yet in practice a lot of us probably think there are when it comes to going obout our lives.

Holy cow. Apparently, I'm just slightly to the left, and just a hair libertarian. (-0.63 Economic Left/Right; -1.28 Libertarian/Authoritarian) I've always thaought of myself as slightly right and authoritarian (I mean, a couple of points), but it turns out I'm almost the middle of middle. Maybe it needs different questions. Also, some can be interpreted differently.

Forgive me Prof B. But I'm always suspicious about questions of this nature over the net, someone is collecting data.

However, I've got NO probs revealing to anyone that I am Liberterian/Left. I believe in the "mixed" economy that we used to have. Unfortunately these "nationallsed" industries are now under attack worldwide from "the global mafia" lead by the "world bank".

Having read some previous posts on here about "lazy" nationalised industry workers, I began my trade in the nasty lazy "coal mining" industry. I'm NOT going to name the person who said it but he knows who he is, If he thinks miners were lazy, or asking for "too much" and that our coal was "too expensive" he should get out of his well paid, air conditioned, London based, office with his over inflated bonus for producing NOTHING and see the real world for a change and go and TELL them so face to face. I'm sure he will get the correct response!

In the light of present fuel prices including coal which we STILL import massively due to Maggie's menopausal tyraids in the total closure of our coal fuel industry...........what price our cheap coal now eh?.........over 300 years worth. Now un-minable due to flooding at those levels.....Yes folks!....it's GONE! ...for ever.........GRrrrrr!!!

er um! Does that it clear where I'm coming from Prof?...........

Maybe they are, but without being able to correalate to real people or voting habits it can't be much to worry about.

I sensed myself being "funnelled" by the tone of the questions. I think I'm actually much more right and authoritarian than it shows, but some of the "right" or "authoritarian" questions seemed extreme examples and the left-leaning ones seemed slightly more reasonable by comparison.

Also, like in the question you mentioned, your answer depends on your beliefs as to the causes and effects and relationships between economics, government, and social ills. For example, opening up trade with a poorer country can increase the income of individuals in that country, leading to a better standard of living within the population. On the otherhand, the population could be exploited by corporations seeking cheap labor unless some minimal standards are imposed. So, I couldn't honestly say "large multinational corporations" are categorically evil or good. But the test seemed to require me to make that choice.

I'd say they are going to get biased results, and it's written by someone on the left. They should have their left-leaning questions written by some left-leaning person, and right-leaning questions written by some right-leaning person. Then you'd have the viewpoint stated by someone who themselves thinks it's reasonable. I wonder if they are going to use their poll results to steer some lobbying or other political agenda.

Seafarer, I'd say that your "judgement" is fairly balanced.

Me? well I'm a Socialist, but of the "mixed economy type"......There's room for all! and anyway, do you realise just how many "private industies" were supported by the nationalised ones? Just like "NASA" in the Capitalist U.S. of A???.......

The U.S. government "Taxes and Spends" more than any other on this PLANET! and they call themselves "Free market Capitalists!"...........

Y'know, maybe there's NOT such a difference between us after all?

it's just that "someone" wants to gain advantage!..

I'm slightly more left wing than pope benedict xvi, but not as authoritarian as him, or left wing as robert mugabe and saddam hussain...

(looks through shifty eyes) well it's lucky I hadn't planned any mass genocide and ethnic cleansing then isn't it...

"mua-hahaha"... etc...
