Sewills clockmakers, Liverpool
Discussion
Talking of old clocks, I recovered my old family clock from my mothers loft the other day. The workings were in good nick and complete but the wooden case was just a pile of rotten rubbish, half missing and totally beyond repair.
So I'm going to get it functional and create a new open mounting for the mechanism, using glass with the family tree etched into it.
Does anyone know what sort of solution I should dip the mechanism into in order to dissolve about 120 years of accumulated crud?

I'm really sorry to be the bearer of bad news...
but they don't any more, I'm afraid. The owner started drinking just a little too much. He thought he could handle it but when someone came in with their retirement carriage-clock he slurred some abuse about it being "a piece of shite". Obviously this wasn't taken very well by the elderly patron.
To make matters worse he pulled his john-thomas out and started to urinate. Luckily the Saturday-boy managed to move the carriage clock before any lasting, and caustic, damage was done - but with a final strain the owner managed to wet the patrons over-coat.
Of course, he was sued - it made the local press. No one wanted to visit the shop anymore and he went out of business. He now drives a Taxi.
Look out for a maroon Vectra, reg: T981 PPG. That'll be him usually, though he sometimes borrows other cars. Ask him about it - because apparently he is totally unapologetic. He talk you through it happily. Obviously it's a bit biased but he does the actions too. Just, and I speak from experience, if he goes for his flies... take AT LEAST 8 steps back because he has one hell of a muscle group "down there"... seriously.

So are you suggesting I piss on my Grandad's clock?
