In my experience Merc' drivers are even worse - they don't get as far as the tacho, they're to concerned with pulling out infront of people

I don't drive a BM out of choice, quite the opposite

I had the unfortunate experience of visiting an MB forum after going from a TVR to a manual-box Merc.

The argument about manual v auto ran and ran until one t%%t posted this:

"ah yes it's o.k. you going on about engine braking and the auto not changing when you want to, but in the end, with a manual box, you have to keep moving that stick all the time"

Never went there again.

If he had he didn't notice it. That looks a tad like a wind up to me though.

I wouldn't be suprised if most people didn't know what half the guages in their dash did. I know a few people (actually all women funnily enough) who didn't know what the temperature guage was/did, normally this is found out when the car over heats and you ask why they didn't see it on the temp guage usually followed by the reply, is that what that thing does . I know plenty including men who haven't a clue what a tacho does, even after I've explained it.

Most people are only concerned with a speedo so they don't get a ticket, a fuel guage so they can keep going and a radio so they can turn up the volume to drown out those nasty noises the engine is suddenly making. If a warning light comes on they usually don't know what that is either and ignore it.

Hell, I need mine to tell me the engine is running.
Oh and what do these stalks do on each side of the steering wheel? I know one operates the wipers but I have not got a clue what the other is for? From what I can work out it causes a light to flash on the dash? If that is all its for I will NOT be using it in the future.

You are here at PH, ergo you are interested in cars and not a dork.

Rip them off and throw them away to save weight, people assume you wont use them anyway so why bother?

It's not BMW drivers, it's Yanks!

I remember reading an exchange on jag-lovers - a chap had noticed that the oil pressure gauge on his new XJ always registered "straight up" when the engine was running. Transpired that Jag had changed the gauges on the new models so they did that. Apparently it was because on older models they got lots of customers taking their car back to US dealers because the oil pressure kept changing!

As a Beemer tech I can vouch for the fact that some are diabolical, and 'R.T.F.M' is occaisionally put on job cards 'Read The F***ing Manual' for those who book a car in thats doing what its supposed to do, allthough some blame has to lay at the salesmans feet for not doing the handover correctly.

How about someone who books a car in saying their windscreen washers don't work, I get in the car and as soon as the ignition is on the display says; [windscreen wash fluid low]

One of my assorted ex-wives had a Xantia that was a fine car until the day it threw a rod through the front of the sump because she'd let the oil level get too low.
Of course it was was MY fault for not having checked it for her, but if she'd ever thought to mention the flashing orange light with the dipstick symbol on it, sometime during the four weeks it must have been winking at her, maybe I could have saved the engine.
We split up instead, so not my problem
