Scantily clad young women on a carnival float proved too much for a South Coast seaside resort. The girls, in hot pants and Basques, were ordered to cover up by police as they boarded a lingerie shop's float for the Rotary Club's annual carnival in Worthing, West Sussex. "You can get away with it along the coast in Brighton but this is good old-fashioned Worthing" said Sgt Andy Westwood, who ordered the eight women to put on more clothes.

So long as they weren't indecently exposing themselves, what right does Plod have to tell people what to wear?

And Bill, while we're on the subject of Hot Pants, I may be be able to come after all

How completely and utterly pathetic. As there are no indecency laws for women what legal basis did the neo-victorian plod have for their demands?

Maybe they thought they were Basque terrorists?

Seems typical of the reaction these days. My guess is that the days of carnivals are numbered.

The big problem is getting insurance cover for the vehicle that the float is based on, as many insurance companies are reluctant to authorise such a use.

Once you have the vehicle you then have to spend a fortune and hours decorating it. In the meantime those organising the procession have to deal witht he police and other statutory authorities, often needing to do a risk analysis etc. Having done all that, provided scores of marshals to man road closures, who then have to put up with abuse from drivers who dont want to wait for 5 or 10 minutes, whilst a procession raising money for good causes passes.

If to top it all you can't have scantilly clad ladies (or presumably men) you hae to wonder how long they have to survive. Presumably these girls were dressed no different to many models on posterboards around the country?

Er, I work in Worthing. Its a squithole with no redeeming features whatsoever. Most sensible people left back in time because of the smell generated by the clavulanic acid plant that later relocated away from humanity. These policemen have a seriously bad case of wishful thinking here...
