School gives pupils f-word limit

Pupils are being allowed to swear at one Northamptonshire secondary school - as long as they limit their use of bad language to five times a lesson.

A tally of how many times the f-word is used will be kept on the board.

Parents of children at the Weavers School in Wellingborough were told of the new policy in a letter, according to a report in the Daily Mail.

The policy, which comes into effect when term starts next week, has been condemned by parents' groups and MPs.

"In these sorts of situations teachers should be setting clear principles of 'do and don't'," said Nick Seaton, chairman of the Campaign for Real Education.

'Everyday language'

But headmaster Alan Large said he had received no complaints about the policy.

"The reality is that the f-word is part of these young adults' everyday language," he told the Daily Mail.

Assistant headmaster Richard White said the policy was aimed at two classes of 15 and 16-year-olds that were particularly unruly.

"Within each lesson the teacher will initially tolerate (although not condone) the use of the f-word (or derivatives) five times and these will be tallied on the board so all students can see the running score," he wrote in the letter.

"Over this number the class will be spoken to by the teacher at the end of the lesson."

The school, which has 1,130 pupils, also plans to send "praise postcards" to the parents of children who do not swear in class. [/quote]

Unfortunately the public sector schooling system is one of the hotbeds of liberalism in this country. We'll be letting them smoke in class next...

I disagree with this because all it does is show them that swearing is an acceptable form of expression. It's not the bad language that offends me, it's the fact that with so many other words available, people use the word as a verb, adjective and a noun and all it does it make people sound like ill-educated morons.

Jeez, I limit myself to 5 times in the class.

The absolute limit is mobile phones. I'm going back teaching this Sept and I'm guaranteed to be disturbed by these bloody things, kids texting nonsense and inane bloody ringtones. I hate mobile phones and have yet to own one. WHEN YOU ARE IN MY CLASS, YOU TURN YOUR ING PHONES OFF OTHERWISE I WILL DO ABSOLUTELY NOTHING AS I AM NOT ALLOWED TO. It's high time that UK law didn't apply in classrooms.

I want to have a big tank full of Conc Sulphuric acid on my desk and a big sign above my blackboard stating "If your mobile phone goes off in my lesson, you have lost your first life and the next time it goes off, it goes in the acid bath and you can watch it dissolve in a cloud of smoke"

Used to go to school with a guy who was generally very clean mouthed, an unusual thing at my good clean Catholic school, but when he did occasionaly swear there always seemed to be a teacher walking behind him. Sort of wonky sweardar. Caused me much amusement.

Think the whole general swearing thing is gradually changing everywhere. i am a serial offender when with friends, but amongst family or in public I refrain as i understand it causes offence to some, but it seems these standards are changing.

I always believe that anyone who regularly swears in their daily speech (and that is a LOT of you, and on occasion, me), have no right going about telling kids not to swear.

Some example we set, huh?

So though I am incensed that the message to the school is "swearing a little is okay", I know I am very much part of the reason why they swear in the first place.

You think thats flippant...

One of our teachers let kids smoke in his class, he was a bit of a weed though. Used to get caned by the kids, then when he told other teachers / went for help etc. They took the piss out of him...

So how are kids supposed to learn respect and discipline from that

Didn't affect me though... So F off!

If you get to the end of the lesson without using your quota it would be rude not to get your money's worth.

I thought teachers were supposed to be intelligent?

this is aimed at 2 unruley classes and the teacher has to mark on the board every time someone swears.

now every person in that will swear. some will get all 5 out streight away just to act hard. others will swear when they get bored just to disrupt the lesson a bit causing laughter from all the other students and a big discusion will ensue which will be prolonged by th students just to waste time.

Teacher "can anyone tell me when the great fire of London was"?

little Johny" F-ing 1666 miss"

Teacher" who was the king of England during the norman invasion"?

little johny"dont know miss, but he was a shitcock"

Little Johny " miss does that count as 2 swear words or just one?"

this bit

"according to a report in the Daily Mail"

makes me think that we are maybe not being told the whole story.

I would take anything that starts off in that rag with a pinch of blue-rinsed, sanatogen-popping, stick-waving sceptism - due to the vile little-Englander paper that it is.

If a mobile goes off in class at my kid's school, it is immediately confiscated, and the owner then has to explain herself to the head mistress and give a good reason as to why it should be returned. Funnily enough it doesn't happen too often.

swearwords are more effective if you use them sparingly so perhaps this is a good thing.

love machine you need a beaker of some non-conducting liquid (heptane or something? hexane is a bit volatile) and drop the phones in that. As long as bits of them don't start dissolving they'll probably be ok.

We were then given a medicine ball and told to hold it out in front of us. Well u kids being kids didnt realise what was gonna happen and let me tell you swearing didnt happen to frequently at my school. It ing killed.

Just another case of slipping standards, these kids will be the future trouble, if they are not taught basic respect!!

It is not necessarily all the fault of the individual school, but rather that of the educational establishment.

When Labour came to power they had a free hand to try and destroy any means of effective discipline in schools, with the greatest emphasis on preventing schools excluding unruly pupils.
