I know it's a very boring question, but I thought I'd chuck it out to a wider audience! In summary, I have had presented to me a VERY interesting, and potentially highly lucrative, acquisition opportunity. However, it's fairly risky because if Sweden and / or Denmark join the Euro it'll be worthless!

I've spoken to a number of (so called) 'experts' who are saying (in the main) "no they won't join, at least not for a long time". However, I ain't so sure! The way Scandinavian Governments Tax and spend I wouldn't be surprised if they have a serious recession in the next few years. I can imagine the population looking to the Euro as a way out!

The Danish have a massive levy on cars, huge by all accounts.

They can keep that sort of behaviour to themselves thanks very much.

How long do you need for this secret investment opportunity to bear fruit? It would take a few years of them seriously debating the merits of it and then getting all the laws and stuff through and the petty arguments that naturally arise from that sort of thing. So you would probably have a lot of warning if it was going to happen.

The Danes have very much been following the UK lead on the issue of joining the €. I'd say that, given the €'s current situation where it has lead in its ass due to the German and French economies still being in the mire and the Italians increasingly in debt without access to their usual recourse of rubbing off a few zeros to regain competitivity, the sensible scandi's will stay well out of it for now.

I'd say the constitution debacle will further delay considerations of the brits and the scandis joining the €, though there may be more progress once Schroeder (soon) and Chirac (2007) have gone.

Sweden has negotiated all sorts of exemptions from EU law (state monopoly on booze as an easy example). Don't see why it wouldn't extend that to the Euro currency...after all - *we* haven't joined...

Speaking as a half-Danish PH'er, I would say that eventually I think Denmark will go across to the Euro. But it will still take some time. With each referrendum that they have on the matter the votes 'for' get higher and higher, they are almost at a 50/50 split now. Not sure about Sweden, but think they are in a similar position. Personally I will be sorry to see the Krone go, but time will tell.

Well if I, hypothetically, were to buy the company - it would only be on the basis that I could sell it in a few years - for more than I paid for it, obviously! Plus I'd have the profits of the company in the meantime. If, however, there was a lot of speculation that either country was going to join the Euro, it could make selling it almost impossible. This is the conundrum.

Is it like in the Dukes of Hazzard, when they find the box of loot, but it's confederate money?

Well I believe that eventually they will both join. As I see Norway joining as well, but they probably hesite more. The country is rich with oil and other valuable minerals for example, plus it has one of the best fishing areas in use. But time will tell. Personally how I see it, the EU hasn´t brought us anything really. We are just good netto payers for the poor countries. And the reasent trend is that, we are loosing our industry abroad little by little. Besides I do miss the Finnish Mark

If a country can opt out of EU law then surely a citizen can opt out of UK Law ?

Something the Gypsies seem to have done.
