Chelsea vs Liverpool? I swear they fix the CL draws.
Its fixed the moment they make it easy for bigger, more well known teams to get through to the big money group stage with the seeding system. I can see why they do it, so they get big names in the final stages, but it sucks being a smaller team, who has to overcome the obstacle of seeding, even though you qualified, just the same as everyone else.

Course its rigged they didnt want liverpool in the draw in the first place so hmmm lets see who has got pretty much the best team going ah yes the chelski, now mr lampardich go down there and score and then mr robbeneski you score a few too. Not a problem liverpool go bye bye.
Just like last season then........NOT!

Of course they do. Its a money spinner. That why they have seeds in competitions. They couldn't possible have a small team get to the final.

Mostly because over the course of the competition the small team is virtually certain to get creamed by a larger team anyway, seedings may speed the procedure up (or indeed may not) but in a competition that goes on as long as champs league it's a virtual certainty to happen.

Agreed but how come Chelsea weren't seeded?
Over the last three seasons they've finished 3rd, 2nd and won their domestic league and were knocked out of the last 2 CL's in the semi's. A better record than either Arsenal, Liverpool (excl their CL win) or Man Utd who were all seeded.

excellent point, but UEFA base their seeding system on how much money you pay their committee members to seed you, it has nothing to do with past performance !
Actually it is based on past performance, but they base it on a number of years (more than 3), that's why Arsenal as double winners in 1998 weren't seeded in 1999 and I had the same gripes......

I'm sure they would get creamed, but lok at it this way. My team, Everton, had to play a seeded side in the qualifying round. That meant that the chances of us progressing were slim. Liverpool, man Utd, etc, all were seeded so had easier teams to play against. Now, although that itself doesn't bother me that much, Uefa are purposefully attempting to fdeny the smaller teams the big money prize for getting into the group stages. Exactly how are small teams going to evolve, and get to that point, if they keep an even playing field when it comes to the games you play? (Not to mention that blody dodgy decisin collina gave.. Git!)
To be fair to Everton, they had a hard draw against Villareal, but they don't really deserve a seeding with no participation in the competition in the last few years.
Liverpool on the other hand are defending champions (although that looks like a million to one shot!) and should really be seeded considering that historically they are the number 1 team and they won it last season!
As for getting Chelsea in the group stage, whether it is fixed or not, we will just have to beat them like we did last year. This time all that "the best team lost" tripe from Mourinho won't be necessary as we, the best team will win and he will be wrong again!

It's based upon performance in European competition over the last five years, some coefficient points coming from the overall performance of teams from your league, and some coming from the teams performance - hence Liverpool would be highest seeded of the FA entrants anyway because of UEFA and Supercup in 2000 - 2001 last years EC victory and a decent if uninspired run in champs league 2001-2002.

I'm not denying the reasons for seeding teams that in the past have done well, but in my opinion it is done in a fashion that is to the detriment of new teams coming in. A bit loke an old boys club, where they lok after the regulars!

That may be so but, unless I'm missing something (it's been a very long week) using the above Arsenal shouldn't have been seeded and Chelsea should have.
Still

Chelsea - in one season did well < Arsenal perpetually in CL but always crap. Or so it would seem any way Chelsea were seeded 2nd seeds the 'unseeded' teams in that group were Anderlecht (not a bad side) and Real Betis (a bloody good side and something of a threat)
