I'm flying to Vegas via a 2 hour stop in Dallas Fort Worth. My plan for killing 2 hours is to buy myself a new camera (a Canon 350D, already decided on this) so I can play with it on the plane from there to Vegas.

Does anyone know if the shops at American Airports are good value for money compared to the bright lights of sin city?

If you're flying out of Vegas all I can say is it will take 2 hours just to check in!

Absolute chaos!!!

My experience of American airport shopping is that it is woeful at best. Normally just booze and the standard overpriced Toblerone.

This applies to SFO, JFK and BOS. I didn't see the international part of Vegas, but the internal part wasn't up to much.

The yanks don't understand the concept of duty free like we do over here - don't forget most of their flights are internal, most of ours are international.

As for booze prices in duty free - damn competitive, as are ciggies!

You've obviously never been to an american airport before have you?

www.dfwairport.com/shops/overview-e.php

you can buy food, food, food and possibly a magazine or paper at the airport and not much else.

I bought a camera in a shop in SF last year and they cloned my credit card so don't let it out of your sight if you buy a camera!

Agreed. Haven't been all over the good ol' US of A, but NYC airports are absolutely rubbish. Coffee and a magazine is about as good as you'll get.

...absolutely nothing like the terminals at LHR or LGW.

Flew into Vegas from LA last year and you pass through the the "domestic" departure area as you leave the plane. It has "some" shopping, but most of the area is full of video slot machines, glittering lights, and yes....just about every fast food outlet you can think of.

The international departure area, by comparison, is absolute rubbish!! There's only one BK counter and one hole in the wall duty free shop with the obligatory booze, fags, and perfumes. You can tell they cater to the domestic market.

if you have to kill a few hours - there is literally nothing there. Particularly once you're through security for international flights. I sat there for 4 hours once and absolutely nothing was open, couldn't even buy a coffee.

As mentioned above, in my experience you will not find shopping like there is at LGW / LHR at any US airports.

www.amazon.co.uk who also managed to beat the airport and Far east discount prices.

I'm possibly doing something similar soon. So would it be cheaper to buy at LHR or find a shop in California for a digital camera?

on the way back from Thailand at the airport, there was a nice watch, started to bargain the price down, went to pay for it with the left over cash, but found out it was in us$ not thai baht.

Did I feel silly!

Not that much for a 350D, from what I've seen (I may be wrong of course), though lenses seem to be a slightly different story. Factor in the occasional problems with international warrantees, items missing from the box and different power supplies and the few quid you will save aren't really worth it.

My Father-in-Law is a photographer freak, and he says you'll never find cheaper then in the UK, except on occasions in Hong Kong.

We certainly got stung in Dubai last year, buying a camera in duty free that was the same price as it's successor, on sale in jessops in the UK!

Do your research carefully!

So my best bet would be a trip to Tottehnam Court Road tomorrow lunchtime...

Thanks guys.

Also, what does one do about running electrical stuff in the States. I'm going to need to run a phone charger, a mac powerbook and charge camera batteries. Are there converters available to do this?

All your chargers and the like will have variable voltage 110v-240v or a switch I would have thought.

Its just the plug adaptor you need.

If your going to Vegas, just buy one at a mall there. Airports are very expensive places to shop here.
