The people I bought my car off have advertised their garage in no less than 6 places! I've peeled off the sticker and it's left some adhesive behind. What should I use to get rid of it? (Hot water doesn't work).

Yep, WD40 is very good. The propellant in de-icer is also very good, and it gets rid of stains in upholstery like a dry cleaning fluid very well too (de-icer, not WD40).

I use a hairdryer on the sticker to help soften the adhesive and make it easier to peel away, either using a plastic scraper or my nails. Alternatively, Autoglym Intensive Tar Remover is effective in removing any residue left by adhesive.

If you can get it 3M adhesive remover is specifically formulated to do this job by people who know what they are doing (likely they made the adhesive in the first place!)

In the States you can buy it where you get paint and body supplies.

One of two things always works on adhesive - meths or white spirit.

I managed to get the residue left from blacked out windows off once - through a whole car. Admittedly it took me hours, but nail polish remover and a scraper / razor did the trick.

Plastic scouring pad and some very hot water, other option is a razor blade.

as said above - nail varnish remover (acetone) will do the trick, but may dissolve paintwork/plastics.

Ethanol (as in meths or cheap vodka) will take most adhesive residues off with sod all effort and no risk to paint or plastics...

Whatever you choose, the key with solvents is to use lots of them - the more solvent you use, the easier it will dissolve the residue.

Don't laugh- but apparently peanut butter works!!
Personally I'd rather have it on toast with jam.

Panel Wipe is what you need - does get rid of sticky residues, doesn't damage your paint. It's used by body shops to remove any surface crud on panels before they're painted or in between coats.
