I need to open an account, so thought why not see if there's any that haven't already merged and given out shares or cash to account holders with a decent amount stashed with them. Is this idea a waste of time ?

I'm with Standard Life, I did hear rumours of them floating next year... now was that last year?

They normally get you to sign something along the lines of "I aint a carpet bagger and will get bugger all if the society merges", unfortunately.

Yes waste of time. The remaining mutuals have a clause for new members which states any potential windfall will go to charity

not much comfort to the off-spring when they go looking to take out a cheap mortgage,
and find a herd of freeloaders, have c-bagged away the smaller lenders eh. still the 80's were a good time

The train has definitely left the station......'98/99 was a good time to open an account at every building society you could find.....Some of them may have won, as I can't even remember 1/2 of them...must be some paperwork somewhere

Yes; unfortunately I only put the minimum sum into each account, say £10, and they made the qualifying amount higher. Did well on Scottish Widows though and got a few hundred elsewhere, more by luck than skill.

The only two left I can think of are Nationwide and Saffron Walden.
