Here's something I'd like you all to try, a bit of AUM chanting - at your pets.

Essentially it goes like this. Get the attention of any pets you might have and then chant AUM.

But how to chant AUM I here you cry.

Well you need to first understand that it is a very very long sound - in fact it should be as long as you can make it - typically 10 seconds is a good effort.

It begins with a long 'Ahhhhhhhhhhhh' running into an 'Oooooooooohhhhhhhhhmmmmm' and then finishing with an 'mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm' sound.

The 'Ahhhhhh' sound should come from the back of your throat - it almost has a robotic sound - quite metalic.

Next you need to run this into an 'OOOOhhh' sound - the 'Oh' sound needs to be durious (long) but if you listen carefully the sound moves into you chest, it's still very much in your mouth cavetiy but you chest will resonate little more than with the the 'Aaahhh' sounnd, and this is what you need to happen - get your chest resonatingto the 'Ahhhh' sound.

Next, you need to run into the 'mmmmmmmmmm' sound - this should revererate arround your head - especially round the area between your eyes - it really is just a 'hmmmmm' sound - but you should feal the vibrations in your head, and the trick is to change your tone from the 'ohm' so it starts in your throat, moves to your chest and thn pregresses back up to your head.

So.... just make the 'AUM' sound last as long as you can and, especially with with the 'U' bit and you're pretty much on the ball.

Let me know how you get on and tell me what your pets do!

Edited To Add: I'm really curious about those of you that regularly talk to your animals. It appears that fish and such like don't quite cut it so I'm lookig to thos of you that have 'conversations with your creatures' if you get my drift.

Erm... Cat stared at me as though i had a wellie on my head. It was not even a vaguely interested stare either. It was more of a 'What the hell are you doing you ridiculous excuse for a biped' type of stare. Mind you, he stares at me that way quite often...

I hope this was not just an excuse to make me look silly in front of my ferocious tiger, and in front of the PH massive??

Goats are good, horses generaly work real well with this, sometimes it works quite well with cows so go give it a try.

Yeah probably, do it a bit louder and really try to get a resonant sound for each of the tones. Those being
'Ahhh'
'ohhh'
and
'Mmmm'

Must admit I've never tried it on fish so you might well be onto a loser there - maybe I shoulda specified mammals.

Listen - be quiet won't you "WEEEeeeeeep weeeeeep" is next week's lesson so if you'd just mind keeping it to yourself for the moment.

No problem Andy - cats are like that - bit surprised it only had an effect of "'What the hell are you doing you ridiculous excuse for a biped' type of stare. Mind you, he stares at me that way quite often..."

But in my opinion cats are like this. Biger mamals are more fun.

FOLKS! DON'T FORGET

Likely the mamal you choose hasn't heard these kind of sounds before so give it a few goes. IMO horses really respond to this with dogs coming a close second.

If your animal just looks back at you in a really wierd way then continue for a moment and see what comes later.

...ok.. tried it on a larger mammal. It again looked at me very oddly. Tutted, and went back inside. My next door neighbour is odd like that. No conversation, or nuffin!

Are you sure you made the 'Ahhhhhhhh' bit last long enough? You should be aiming for at least 8 seconds. (not forgetting there is an Ohhhhh and Mmmmmm to follow)

Chickens – not interested. Don’t like getting bothered this time of night.

Pony – kept putting her ears backwards and forwards whilst looking agitated (she has great big teeth, like a shark).

Goats – 3 looked at me with interest from about 6 feet away. 1 came up to about 6 inches from face then backed off (maybe my leather posing pouch put him off ).

I will ask my wife to do the oooh aaagh cantona thing to the pony tomorrow. She gets on it with it better than I do.

... Upon OUM'ing with my dearly beloved ferocious tiger, I gained an unexpected response...

Does anyone know how to get blood out of clothes, and carpet??

(PS... This is not my cat.. Mine is 10 times bigger, far more ferocious, and ginger! )

Any other sounds that you might make giving this kind of reaction?

Is this behaviuor radically different to what you would normally expect? (By that I mean most people talk to their animnals, but very few AUM chant at them (just off to edit my original post to refelect this point)
