Just got back from a trip abroad and wondered if this annoys you as much as it does me.
You get off the plane and make your way to the carousel, its not going round and its not surrounded my many people,so you get a trolley and stand behind the yellow line.
The carousel starts up and the space you have left vacant between the yellow line and the now rotating carousel is filled my all the people that have been having a crafty fag at the back of the hall.
If everybody stayed behind the line we would all be able so see and reach for our case, and why does a family of four have to stand in front of me surely it only needs Dad to grab the case and pass it back to his offsprings.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

YES! Glad to know I'm not alone in HATING this!

Had some "posh bint" saying to me "Aym sure we're all waiting for luggage" - as I (admittedly) muscled through the crowd to pick up my bag.

I'm afraid to say I really was at the end of my tether that day and came out with: " OFF! IF I DON'T PULL MY BAG OFF THIS ING THING THEN IT WILL BE TOO FULL FOR OTHER PEOPLE'S BAGS - WHO ARE WAITING TOO YOU RUDE COW!". I think her husband took a look at me, saw the wild look in my eyes, and decided not to interfere as I, clearly, wasn't going to put her in any physical danger....without further provocation....

At first I was mortified I had come out with such a rant. By now I'm feeling reasonably smug.

As someone who sees the other side of the wall.....if cases dont come off then there is often no place for the remainder (cue hairy-arsed baggage handlers picking noses and leaning through looking for 'totty'). If you have a non-descript bag wrap a coloured cloth or some tinsel round the handle or strap - makes it much easier to eye-ball at a distance.

Here endeth the lesson.

I usually go diving, consequently my bag usually weighs 30 odd kilos and takes a good yank to get it off and once its moving it keeps going. Every time I say excuse me, am ignored so just plough through them knocking them and all their crap aside - cue face pulling.

And why is it that there's always a couple of cases that arrive on the belt first, but are still there when most of the luggage has been collected? When you have two cranky children after an early morning flight, your cases are taking an age to appear, and the first two cases on the belt have passed you a million times......aaaargh!!

Those are the 'spare' cases that the throwers put on belt to tease you!

I'm so glad I usually manage to squeeze eveything into a bag that just about passes for hand luggage, don't get these problems and save about 45 minutes

Haha - you should do what I did the last time i came back to the UK.

I bought some tyres whilst in the states and brought them through checked in luggage.

The tyres managed to get in just on my weight allowance and dimensions allowance. My big rucksack* went on my back as carry on. The tyres were taped up as pairs.

In Gatwick - I didn't exactly hurry off the plane - I mean whats the chance of my luggage coming off first. No no, my bags compete to come off last - so no hurry today. Let the plane empty, get my rucksack, clear walking air ahead.

Found a trolley at reclaim - and went to look for my carousel - only to find that my tyres had made it through before all the luggage and were waiting for me!

Result.

Pity I then spent 30 minutes chatting to HM Customs...

*its not that big, i'm not one of these fools who uses a whole overhead locker for his a bag that should of been checked in. this bag passes all the carryon requirements.

Do you really want to know?

Well I'm here so I might as well. Here are the possibilities.

The handling company has a 'first bag' policy ie has a driver that picks up a first load quickly partially to appease the airline into thinking that the bags are there early. The 'first bag' time is noted and used as a bargaining tool when contracts are up.

Could be a wide body aircraft. Wide bodies are normally loaded with 'cans' (metal box pre-filled with cases) but also have a small hold for last minute cases and cargo that is unsuitable to go in a can. Unaccomanied baggage goes into this category - the pilot can turn it away at his discretion (usually due to weight factors) so being in a can would be a disaster. This is often the first stuff to be unloaded.

These unaccompanied bags are obviously not going to be picked up so will go round and round until an agent picks them up later. Worry not - these bags get extra security examinations since the passenger is not there to be blown up with them

Anyone still awake?

the big carriers sometimes have priority luggage which comes off the plane alot faster than the rest.

Where do you find this good yank? There's never one around when I need a bag carrier.

It don't come off a lot faster. It should come off first (good packing). BUT *PH special warning*

Anything marked priority or that is obviously 'posh' is liable to incur the wrath of the proletariat and get a good trashing (lets see how far this one will fly etc). Just look like joe average and dont take anything odd shaped unless it is VERY well padded.

[edit]for spelling I hate bad spelling - but not for grammar

Honourable mention:

The wreckers at Gatwick impressed me this year by managing to break the INSIDE of my electric toothbrush case which was buried in my suitcase.

If you fly Monarch, you upgrade to Premium and your luggage gets priority, which in my experience means it gets decorated with "priority Luggage" and then left at the back with all the other cases....

And I agree, it is annoying, but I also have a nice Mares Just Add Water dive bag which is F huge, so the pikey family who step in front of me normally get bowled over........

Virgin is quite good getting bags out for those in the posh seats. I accidentally leave my 'posh' tags on for the next trip in economy too (put the bag on the scales at checkin with the tags to the other side so the check-in clerk doesn't spot them and remove them ).

Talking of things in bags getting broken. A colleague has twice returned from SFO to LHR in recent months with 4 bottles of wine packed in his hard sided case. Nothing more than lots of clothes holding them in place. Mad. But 100% success so far.

The most annoying thing for me is the baggage handlers snipping or ripping off my luggage tags - only reason I can think of is because they say Virgin Gold or whatever. Gits.
