Repairing marble kitchen tops

I’ve managed to get some scratches in my kitchen worktops by twisting wine bottles resting on the surface whilst trying to open them. I’m surprised as I thought marble was as hard as rock :). Anyway. Does anyone know of a way of repairing the scratches? The marble is white with grey veins (Carrara marble I believe). I was thinking some kind of resin (e.g. epoxy) then rubbed down and polished?

generally marble is very tough but it depends on what kind as to how it marks.
as far as i know it is difficult to cover scratches to marble but i will ask my mum soon (she used to import and sell marble) and i will get back to you.

Cheers mate. I don't think this stuff is very hard. It's obviously quite pourus because it stains as well.

Quite possibly mate. After a year dealing with the interior designer that put the kitchen in (along with the rest of the flat) nothig would surprise me.
They custom built a lovely wine rack out of MDF but it started showing cracks where laminates were contracting and expanding. After getting it back to their workshop and trying to build another they ran into the same problems and decided it wasn’t possible to build the unit as designed so offered me a completely different commercially available unit instead.

how can you make a nice looking wine rack out of MDF? i attempted to make nice design pieces from MDF last year and it was an almost complete failure. in the end the only decent piece i got was by laminating MDF with other things and then turning it into a bowl. in almost every circumstance (other than sheer economisation) i find real wood ot be better than MDF.
ofcourse this is only my opinion.

Yes I know it sounds crap but it actually looked very nice. It was sprayed white so you wouldn’t know what it was made out of. Here’s a pic of it in situ:
The problem was to get the inch thick lattice structure they’d bonded 0.5 inch MDF back to back. Where it expanded and contracted at different rates you got cracks in the coating. That’s the bit they couldn’t get around so they scrapped the idea and offered me this instead:

Just in case there are any kids or recovering addicts reading this thread, I have it on good authority that snorting the components of methyl-methacrylate resin doesn't get you high, and willl just make your eyes water (lachrymatory! run away!).
Best stick to the coke, and don't try snorting marble dust either, it's bad shit

I don't think methyl methylacrylate is a lachrymator. It makes the fridge smell funny though (thats where we keep it). It says "lachrymator" on the bottle of phenylacetylene we have... I sniffed a bit to see (I didn;t think it was a lachrymatkr) and nothing happened. It probably just says it on the bottle. certainly not a hardcore lachrymator anyway.

OK perhaps I remembered wrong, I was thinking of one of the monomers (the methacrylate part) that you mix with the other one to get polymethyl methacrylate. One of these was definitely bad shit to get near your eyes / respiratory system.
