I always hated this band and similar ones at the time, thinking them pretentious and samey pop fodder,,,, however, having just listened to Rio, the lyrics were well written, witty and, at the time, very fresh, being original.
I can see now why Top of the Pops isn't pulling in the viewers or singles needing not to sell millions to get to number one anymore, there is little originality left!
Flicking through the music channels, you are confronted with either inane thrash guitar crap, or 'Rap' groups talking over other peoples'(proper artists) tunes, and they all seem to have the same tune, just variations on themes! Is throwing your arms about like a mentalist, showing off your very tasteless gold jewellery a parody, or for real????
The new 'critically acclaimed' bands are no better, as nowadays, being original means you must sing songs with lyrics that are great,,,,, for anyone who's waiting for their prozac to kick in to stop their suicidal tendancies, the much over-hyped Coldplay and travis being the most guily of the suicide music drones.
If any potential musicians are reading, PLEASE, write your own material to an ORIGINAL tune, if it's from the heart, or raw even, some will buy it, I for one am sick of the same old manufactured crap to gain a quick buck and run!

i remember listening to Simon LeBon being interviewed by Chris Moyles on Radio 1 in 98/99 on the way back from Devon.
i've always liked Duran Duran anyway, but Moyles got LeBon to sing the first part of Wild Boys. For someone who was semi retired you should of heard the notes Simon LeBon managed to hit. Even if you weren't a fan you had to admire the guy's talent - something so lacking nowadays.

I find most of todays 'talent the equivilent to eating, say, a Big Mac, instant gratification, but also instantly forgettable, whereas a 'Full English Breakfast would be, say Massive Attacks' excellent and timeless Blue Lines.
It seems today, the pop market caters only for the fast food, attention deficit disorder 'I want it now!' types,
My point was that even what I then considered pop crap like Duran Duran wern't crap at all, if comparing them to todays diet of tasteless offel, they had/have talent, creativity and their own ideas, and never once, as far as I'm aware, used anyone's elses music and bastardised it!

It is more blasphemous that there really is a LOT of talent out there, but will never get a look in due to corporations running everything, from type of song to what eyeliner the 'artist' should wear, and then force feeding the crap down the kids throats, alnong with as many product plugs they can get away with. It is this situation that will kill REAL TALENT, in favour of crud like, I don't know, so many to choose from, Pondlife, Crazy Frog etc.

Another thing I found out I did, but truly didnt realise as I never gave it a second thought is, I would, hand on heart rather listen to the dulcit tones of a Renault Clio 1.2 engine whilst driving than listen to either Oasis or U2, when either of these come on the radio, I instinctively turn the volume to zero, and I do this without even realising it! scary!!
I went to see Duran Duran a month or so ago in Brum at the football stadium. Top night out seeing as how the majority of the audience were slightly overweight middle aged people (I'm including myself in that generalisation!) and the guys knew what their fans wanted and performed to that brief (even if Simon LB forgot the words to View to a Kill)
As a complete contrast we took my 11 year old daughter and her friend to see Girls Aloud in concert a week or so before the Duran show. Again, they knew their audience and the show was aimed at them. It was a bit more panto style with audience participation and waving/saying hello to fans etc. But it too, to my surprise, was a very enjoyable night out by (shock!) talented performers.
No, they're never going to win any operatic awards but they were good at what they do which is bubblegum pop.
There is a chance that if you keep mumbling about "the young people's music all sounding the same and it's just a bass track or you can't understand the words" then there's a chance some people might think you're REALLY old, Grandad!
