Stopping nuisance calls

Over the last month I've got home from work [i]every day[/i] to find 1, 2 and sometimes 3 silent messages on my answerphone where the caller has hung up as soon as it kicks in.

Dial 1471 and of course its number unknown.

On the odd occasion I do happen to be in (9.00 Saturday morning :mad: or 8.00 evening) someone with a foreign sounding accent tells me I have won a camera phone/can get my calls cheaper/have won a trip to the moon or some other dumbass sales gimmick.

I am ex-directory and paid something like £40 for the privilege, and when I ask where they got the number they tell me its on some f:censored:g database or other... how? and how do I get these b@stards to stop phoning me?

I know there are places where you can register and I've just tried one of these on the internet, a very nice welsh chap called me back and said 'no problem that'll be £29.95 p.a. please'... WTF :rage: [i]they[/i] harrass me and [i]I[/i] have to pay to stop it!

Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

Seconded (and thirded and fourth-ed etc)

Get absolutely zero sales calls these days.... joined TPS about two years ago.

I registered with the tps about 5 years ago and I never get any sales calls at all now.

I'm also ex-directory and it didn't cost me a penny so why did it cost you £40?

Go to the telephone preference service site and register your phone. its free. the cals should dry up after 3-4 weeks.

TPS works a treat, but there is also a service from BT that allows you to block calls from witheld numbers. If it's an automatic dialler from abroad that's calling that may be your only solution.

I registered with TPS and the double glazing type cold calls seem to have stopped but I'm still getting the overseas ones telling me to press 9 to claim my holiday. How can they be filtered and stopped??

TPS = no sales calls

Best thing about TPS is that if anyone does ring you, and you can get the callers name and the company name, they will be fined up to £10k.

I've mentioned this on a couple of occasions when I have got calls and they apologised and hung up quick smart.

Now all we need is something similar for the ws you get at the door!

Been tempted to do the same with junk mail (Mail Preference Service) but as it was from a charity I let them off and just got my name removed from their mailing list.

The TPS wont stop the offshore ones there is a loophole that the direct marketing association of cowboys (I added the last bit) take advantage of.

Hmm have to wait and see then as these guys don't sound like they're from around these shores. Maybe will end up paying £29.25 just to maintain my sanity

That £29.95 thing may or may not work, but the BT one DOES!

Actually I did get two of those automated calls the other day and I am registered with TPS
