Some of the sentences our Courts are handing out are extremely depressing. The Courts are the weak link in our Criminal Justice System. When he gets out in a few years, the Police will have a significant job on their hands keeping an eye on him.
The law allows a juvenile to be detained "At Her Majestys Pleasure" - the equivalent of a life sentence for an adult. That is what he should have got and he should be serving at least 10 years. Ask yourself what he would have got if sentenced in the USA?
A second offence and he should hang, IMO.

Well there is one ethnic group who is significantly statistically more likely to suffer from mental illness.

Most likely “Christ this bloke should be banged away for 10 years or more but if I sentence him to that his barrister will appeal and it’ll get knocked sown to 5 years or something and I’ll have a mark against my name and so be unlikely to progress much further.”
The judiciary in this country has caused a few problems, granted, but most the time they are restrained by guidelines set down by bleeding heart liberals who live in fluffy bunny worlds.
I do actually agree with a ‘relatively’ lenient sentence for a first offence. With luck it will convince them of the error of their ways and if someone is wrongly convicted not be as bad as it could be. Second offences? Out with the noose, or rusty hammer followed by 15 years 23 hours a day in the cells with Big Bumin’ Baz

They do it because it is their job, like a solider who has to set a land mine or give the order to drop a load of bombs, etc.
In this country, despite what the papers and media in general try to tell us, you are innocent until you plead otherwise or are tried in a court of law. End of and long may it remain so.
When I was interviewed for my training contract the interviewer gave me a scenario. It’s 3 am and you have been called to the police station to represent a 35 year old man who has been arrested on suspicion of the molestation of his 13 year old daughter. When you get there you learn from the custody sergeant that your client has confessed and that there is a full statement from the mother, the girl and Police Dr has just seen the girl and can confirm that although there is no DNA evidence the girl has been sexually active and that there are abrasions in and around her private parts what do you do?
The answer is of course you see your client and once you have spoken to them do all you can to defend them or start preparing your mitigation/ bail apps, etc if he continues to admit to the offences he has been charged with.
The twist in the tail? This was a real case, the mother had been having an affair with the custody sergeant, the girl had been active with a number of partners (consensually) and had been ‘bribed’ by the mother with a holiday to the states and a £1,000.

Cases like this are simple.
It was a guilty plea. Just a few excuses trotted out infront of the judge who then passes whatever sentence he sees fit.
It is the contested cases that really test you.
For the most part it is a thankless task, usually feeling uncomfortable with the questionable morality of your job.
But once in a blue moon along comes a case where someone is genuinely innocent.
I recently represented a man charged with the repeated rape of a child with learning difficulties over a number of years. Reading the case papers would make your blood boil.
But medical evidence was eventually disclosed that conclusively showed that at the time of many of the historic allegations, the complainant was still a virgin.
The defendant was positively not guilty and was released after spending six months remanded in custody for an offence that had never been committed in the first place.
It is these rare cases that both make the job worthwhile and underline the need for a strong minded and determined lawyer to be available to represent those accused of serious crime.

Or they think - 'That wasn't too bad, now i've made some friends inside and learnt some new skills too...'
They should come out thinking 'Bollox, my life is in tatters and I never ever ever want to go back to that hell hole.'

It's bad enough them being part of your past, but to have them become a part of your future, would make the ordeal harder, I would hate for anyone I knew to take this coarse of action.

Or, in a womans world (as has been reported this week in the papers), the victim would be wearing the perpertrators balls as a pair of earrings.
ing unbelieveable.A female friend of mine was raped twice when she was 18 by someone she knew. She never reported it cos the guy told her he would tell everyone she was a slag and that she consented and no one would believe her. She has never got over it. Makes me sick and really really

Everyone will hate you and believe you are guilty. Fortunately for you, there is just a small chance that a decent lawyer might be able to help you to prove ypur innocence.
