It's also the movie where the Germans seem to have got hold of an American Bell 47 helicopter years before the prototype first flew.

Don't take it too seriously.

I enjoy it in the same way that I love Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Complete nonsense, as you rightly say, but hugely enjoyable nonetheless.

If I want to get all serious, then I'll watch Cross of Iron instead.

Oh yes

However, in WED, Burton's expose of the double agent scene is a materwork of hurculean poppycock but utterly sublime.

Got memories of Eurohoon 04', going across the border bridge from France to Germany with the theme tune blairing out of the Aston

Wild Geese is a quality film, and also have a soft spot for Guns of Navarone, but there's something about Where Eagles Dare, despite as Eric rightly points out, it being nonsense. Agree with Der on the unveiling scene, best bit of the film!

Also get the same tension in Bridge Over The River Kwai when Alec Guiness loses the plot and tries to stop the commando blowing the bridge...

Dont be so sure, they will eventually get round to remaking it once they have remade every other old movie and completely ruin it.

It's not impossible that the US got the idea from an uncompleted German design - that happened a lot.
