Door to Door Hawker - Should I be worried?

Just noticed a chap knocking door to door in my street, seemed to be stopping a bit too long at each house and was stooping by the front gates, although I couldn't see that he had a bag.
Anyways, knocks and my door showing a 'traders permit', I say no thanks mate, and he walks away, but then I clearly see him stoop my my front gate by the pavement.
I read somewhere once that these people make a mark on the outside of your property, that might indicate if there are any visible valuables etc.
There does seem to be a line on one of the bricks on my front wall.
Is this my imagination running wild or is there anything in this. If there is, could someone please tell me what the mark is for 'has nothing worth pinching and a big dog'.
If anyone has any knowlege on this, I'd be glad to hear it.

I had one sat outside my house on Friday afternoon.
About 10 mins later there he was knocking on the door.
Said I was not interested, and he cleared off.
Anyhow, about 30 mins later I was out on the balcony having a fag and a cuppa (and generally out of sight).
He was sat waiting across the road, a white van turned up with about 10+ people in it, door opens, northern accent shout from the van "How'd ya do?" to which he replied "f
ing tightarse wers".
Then they cleared off. Hopefully not to be seen again.
Pretty much the response I would expect from Deepest Ascot.
I'd not worry about it.

I don't believe any kind of marking goes on that much, but rather than being of the criminal variety most is simply (allegedly) of the 'don't bother they're not buying door to door' or 'worth trying they bought stuff from me' sort of thing; maybe one of the reasons that people might notice that if one day they give in to guilt and purchase a pack of J-cloths they don't need, they often find that they get rather more door-to-door 'salesmen' over the next week or two than usual; I still believe most of this is due to word of mouth rather than any mysterious little signs though.
