One in 25 fathers could unknowingly be raising another man's child, according to new research.
New genetic techniques have opened a "Pandora's box" of hidden aspects of sexual behaviour, a team from Liverpool John Moores University said.
They said that the implications of so-called paternal discrepancy are huge, and more research is needed to determine how widespread the problem is.
Increased use of DNA profiling and genetic testing has been seen in recent years and is relied on in areas such as organ donation and criminal investigations.
The researchers, led by Professor Mark Bellis, examined a wide range of international studies looking at estimates of paternal discrepancy between 1950 and 2004.
They found that rates of cases where a father was not the biological father of his child ranged from 1% in some studies to as much as 30%.
Experts have generally agreed that the rate is below 10%, with a 4% rate meaning that about one in 25 families could be affected, the study said.
But the researchers, writing in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, said that increased use of genetic testing for diagnosis, treatment and identification was likely to boost rates of paternal discrepancy.
This made the need to understand the true prevalence of the problem even more pressing.
The researchers said: "For any father, identifying that the child they are raising as their biological progeny is actually sired by another man can have substantial health consequences.
"Such knowledge can also destroy families, affecting the health of the child and mother as well as that of any man who is ultimately identified as the biological parent."

I saw a program on sky a few years ago and a doctor was talking about the very same, only he put the stats down to 1 in 10. I'm not saying that I believe him, but I was aware of the issue.
They are the figures that I heard mentioned on more than one documentary.
It's not that shocking really is it when you consider the 'biological' need of some women, a person who happens to fulfill all of their biological criteria in terms of perfect father material and the fact that most blokes would gladly donate reproductive cells at any time.
Why is it that a bloke who sleeps around is widely considered a bit of a stud yet a woman who does the same is a bit of a whore?
I'm certainly not in agreement with anyone sowing their oats elsewhere whilst in a permanent relationship/marriage.
I feel equally sad for men who bring up other mens children unwittingly as I would for a woman who's husband fathers children with another woman behind her back.
If either sex feel the need to go elsewhere then it's only fair that they should end their relationship. Perhaps a routine peternity test post birth is the best way to go, then everything is out in the open and couples can decide on whether to stay together or walk.

That is terribly badly worded - more genetic testing it going to increase the rates of paternal discrepancy? how? This is an article on a pretty big new website and the monkey doesn't even understand the science... increased genetic testing will cause an increase in the detected rate of paternal discrepancy.

X of mine took me to the cleaners with the CSA for a child she had previously told me was not mine (hence the fact that she was an X).
After many thousands of pounds, lost job, lost fiancee etc etc, undetook a DNA test & surprise surprise it wasnt mine !!
Being of the opinion that what goes around, comes around, I truly hope she has a really serious RTA one day & loses the use of her limbs !!

Interesting. As an upshot for us males:
Clearly in the future if one is chased by the CSA - a DNA based paternity check should be *standard* - and not a penny due until its done.
I also think a *standard* paternity test carried out by all hospitals on all children would be a good thing. The very threat of it will be enough to do our society the power of good.
