For washable items, readers have recommended the original PineSol in the washing machine as well as Wisk and Odor Out (available in gallon jugs at Wal-marts or Sams Club.)

For carpets and other unwashable items, sprinkle with cornstarch, talcum or loose chalk. Leave overnight, then vacuum off. Repeat if necessary. A spray on dry cleaner will work also.

Soot (small spot) : Sprinkle table salt on the area generously. Allow the salt to settle for at least 15 minutes then vacuum.

Vacuum or shake off excess. If washable use water as hot as fabric will withstand. Large areas should be professionally cleaned.

Ah, keep me posted on this. I have a cream carpet with soot marks in it.... I had given up all hope, but I'm just off to try the salt thing
