I notice on the side of my pack of Extra mints and it has written on the side:

Contains a source of Phenylalanine. Excessive consumption may produce laxative effects.

Exactly how many mints is excessive? 1 pack? 2 packs?

mmm-five

Different people react to differing amounts. Personally I've never had any problems, but I don't eat more that 3 packets a day.

Good way to loose weight! The sh*t yourself thin diet.

Thought it might be a good few packs, bet they are just covering their backs in case some idiot eats 10 packs and then claims that he sh*t himself....

I don't think the two warnings are related. The one about phenylalanine is for people with phenylketonuria. The one about excessive consumption is for people who are about to go down in a bathyscaphe.

Couldn't tell you exactly how much as it probably depends on how fast your body metabolises it.
I can tell you that it's one of the essential amino acids (proteins) and can tell you all about Phenylketonuria!!

Just had a thought...are they sugar free?
If so they may contain maltitol which would be the thing causing the laxative effect rather than phenylalanine

phenylalanine is an amino acid, and is part of the sweetener Aspartame. Aspartame is a (very!) short chain peptide (protein) consisting of phenylalanine and aspartic acid. In your stomach aspartame is hydrolysed (by acid or more likely by some enzyme) to make the two constituent amino acids. This is why products with aspartame are labeled "contains a source of phenylalanine". There is a disease (Lois mentioned its name - I've forgotten it) where you are unable to metabolise phenylalanine and so munching it gives you kidney problems/death.

Aspartame is made industrially by using a cleverly modified enzyme that does the reverse of the enzyme in your stomach and stitches the two amino acids together

Interestingly )as with so much chemistry, ASpartame was discovered by mistake when James Schlatter (who was trying to make anti ulcer drugs) made some in his lab. He realised its property of sweetness when he licked his finger and tasted a sweet taste. This is why I wash my hands about 10 times a day who knows how many discoveries/poisoning I have averted through this action

aspartame:

aspartic acid:

phenylalanine

Phenylketonuria is the word you were looking for, or just PKU if you prefer!!! It's what we do the heal prick test for on newborns.
Main problems are brain and nervous disorders and bone formation, specifically small heads and prominant jaw bones. Can cause permanent mental retardation.
