Judges warn of 24-hour drinking 'lunacy'
A huge increase in rape, domestic violence and serious assaults will be triggered by the relaxation of drinking laws, concerned judges have warned ministers. One senior judge branded the idea of late-night opening 'close to lunacy'.
[/quote]
Is it just me or does anyone else think this won't make a bit of difference?
The lowlifes that want to fight already have more than enough time and later opening venues to get as plastered as they 'need'.
:soapbox: If the judges are so bothered about it why don't they start handing out some decent sentences to scum who make others lives a misery when out for a night with g/f and/or mates.
Yet I'm more likely to get a hard time from them for busting the ton when its perfectly safe to do so.

I'm afraid I have to agree, I think that 24 hour drinking is a bad idea. The binge drinking culture in the UK is one that's developed over a number of years and if people think that all day opening is going to be a quick fix to the problem then they are sadly mistaken.
The move away from binge drinking is more of an attitude shift and will not happen overnight.

As most Judges are out of touch with the masses anyway it's no great surprise.
I did like the bit on the news saying they thought some seaside towns would turn into Falariki(sp) type places. I thought "excellent finally keeping the tourist money in the UK". But the news reporter seemed to think it was a bad thing..... Weird.

Because it's so hard to get drink at the moment, I mean 12 hours a day isn't enough to get drunk and nowhere I know has establishments called "night clubs" that open until 2am anyway. Why do they seem to think that we can't be trusted to control ourselves? Just because pubs can open 24 hours doesn't mean they will, and even if they did we wouldn't necessarily spend all day every day drinking.
As you say the key to antisocial behaviour is proper sentancing. How many people have watched those "Street Crime UK" type programs on Bravo and been amazed as the voice-over man tells you that the drunken thug who stamped on someone's head was fined £200

As an evening cab driver my view of the 24 hour licensing is it would introduce relaxed drinking like they have on the continent, having to condense drinking into a few hours and then spill out on to the streets like has been happening encourages trouble IMO,the wider range of hours will help lessen the trouble with staggered leaving times.

Yes, but unfortunately, a large number of people ARE unable to control themselves when out drinking. You only have to look at the centre of any decent-sized town or city at closing time to see that.

IMO allowing 24 drinking would be the same as removing speed limits from M’ways and NSL Duel carriageways between 9pm and 6am.
In the first few months it’ll be a bit messy and after 12 months almost everyone will wonder why the hell it wasn’t done years ago.
Damn good idea

Absolutely. Come to think of it, this sounds a bit like Le Mans.

Grrr this annoys me. Judges say there will be more problems on our streets.
Well if said judges actually locked up a few of these people on disorder offences rather than blindly accepting the excuse "i was drunk your honour" "i didn't mean to bash my mate over the head with a bottle" and actually jail the creep maybe people who were drunk would have a bit more respect for the law.

Yes but if they punished those responsible rather than just reducing everyone else's freedom surely that's the ideal solution?

I don't think this is going to be a quick fix, and things may get worse before they get better, but it is absolutely obscene that adults in this country aren't allowed to drink in pubs after 11pm because of legislation brought in during World War One.
As others have said, those who want to get paralytic and fight seem to do pretty well already, so I don't see this making that much worse. Maybe tackling the problems associated with booze by enforcing the age limits more rigourously would help.
Agree wholeheartedly with comments that judges should shut the f
k up while they continue to preside over a culture of outrageous leniency towards persistent criminals.silversun said:

But thats what I'm getting at... It'll be the SAME people that will cause the aggro so nothing will change. Why penalise choice for the majority because of the actions of a few?
I'm not going to start indiscriminately lamping people just 'cos I can drink for longer. I'll still have the same personality, still drink about the same amount, and still wobble off home peacefully as always, and so will the majority of 'balanced' individuals.
If some tw@ts just want to start violence when they've had too many sherberts then they have no place in society imo.

That's correct. And in making a 24-hour drinking available, there will no longer be a 'closing time' as such. People will, instead, fall out in dribs and drabs. Whether drunk or not, you certainly won't have the huge influx of people at 11pm and 2am like you currently have.
(not meaning to pick on you, not personal, simply a good discussion that's all!)
Why will things get worse?
At the moment you get huge numbers of drunks thrown onto the streets at the same time. Staggering (see what I did there?) closing times means less 'surge'. I reckon it will be smoother because there will be more taxis/police 'available' to clear the area. I'd be happier. Taxi drivers will be happier. Coppers are never happy (I don't blame them!)
Job done.
Bet it don't work like that though. Surely there will be some rule that means we will still get everyone on the streets at the same time with the same old problems.

Every pub round here (according to the public notices in the local rag) seems to be applying for a 2hr extension Fri/Sat/Sun...
So that shifts the problem on 2hrs then

I was woking in a pub at the time all day drinking came in on Sundays, and it was exactly like this. To start with it was messy, but after a while people adjusted. Some stayed all day where before they'd gone home and come back, but they ended up drinking more or less the same amount over a longer period once they'd adjusted.
It'll be a good thing once it's bedded in.
