My girlfriend got her smear test results back last week, and in the letter it was said that -
"A Mild abnormality has been found, although this is nothing to worry about, we will schedule another test for 6 months time"
Now, she was worried about this, and in my opinion rightly so, as this is very vague.
On the basis of that, she visited her doctor today, however he more or less said the same thing as the letter.
I am personally quite worried, and in my opinion the feedback she is getting is unacceptably vague.
Am I over-reacting?

My wife had exactly the same results, she (and I) were worried. We waited for the next examination which turned out to be completely clear. Apparently the first test showed some abnormal cells, and apparently this happens quite a lot as the test sometimes throws up some duff readings hence the re-test.

My doctors sent me a letter asking me to refer to the leaflet enclosed where they had underlined the part....
"This MAY not be cancer"

It wasn't by the way...just my 2nd abnormal one in a row....all clear now after the 3rd!
Usually when I get this it means that they had some abnormal or inflammatory looking cells.
Remember on a smear they are looking for a set pattern of abnormality which suggests a possible slow (Ten year slow) change to cancer in the cells.
But its perfectly possible to see abnormal cells that don't fit the pattern of abnormality they are looking for.
For safetys sake (and to cover themselves from you unforgiving public) they can't say its normal.
Once upon a time the GP would have made a decision as to what to tell the patient, and in doing so would have taken some of the responsibility of this, but nowadays we don't have a role in this, and interestingly in the rush to fully inform the patient something gets lost.
If you have any worries go to your GP and sit there until you are happy that you understand. I would.
